NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A video has gone viral after a Long Island man recorded a police officer who threatened to ticket him if he washed his car in the driveway. As WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall reported Friday, the incident happened on Hawthorne Road in Garden City. The 24-year-old said he was washing his 1997 Volkswagen in his driveway when a police officer told him he wasn’t allowed to do that.

The officer said although the car wasn’t going to be washed in the street, which is illegal, washing it in the driveway would still be in the public’s view, Hall reported. No one received a ticket during the ordeal and The Garden City Police Department had no comment about the incident.

The police could have responded by telling the neighbor that the car washing was legal but making frivolous phone calls to the police is not.

Spray the neighbor’s lawn with a concentrated solution of Atrazine 80W.Can’t grow grass on that dirt for 5 years.

Had a busybody neighbor down the street where we used to live. Few years back. Drove everyone on the street crazy. Guy was a mega Oklahoma State fan. Someone, (not saying who) wrote on his drive way with “Son-of-a-gun” OSU Sucks. Couldn’t see it when the concrete was dry. Everytime it rained his driveway said “OSU Sucks”. For 3 or 4 years... :)

Dude, you should have referenced the FCC required “interference disclamer” on her speakers.

Interesting. So now it’s unlawful to do anything your jerk neighbor wants to complain about?

Then the police become personal harassment agents for *anyone* that finds *anything* offensive? Poor judgement on the part of the police, not simply the officer involved.

Seems to me that the police should have told the complainer tough beans, the man’s not doing anything illegal. Then simply driven by, saying nothing while noting that there was no illegal activity taking place.

How about, your fat, ugly wife picks up the newspaper in her robe and I find that to be an offensive sight which is not allowed in public view.

The Police man was just doing his job.

Sure he was..

When they told the cop “This is private property” the cop stated:

“That’s what you say”

Between the lines:

the brothers buy and sell alot of cars, they work on them in the drive way, they wash them, they probably got the neighbor twerked off because the neighbor views it as them operating a business in the driveway because it is all the time.

Its not about washing the car, its about a business.

I not only referenced it, I printed it and put it in her mailbox for her. She was just one of those "special women" if you know what I mean.

In Wichita, Kansas, it’s illegal to bathe your donkey in a bathtub on the front lawn, on Sundays.

Not kidding.

I liked the cop. He got a call from his superiors & did what he was told to do. He knew it was a nuisance complaint. Car looks like it might have been previous owner's winter rat. Whiny neighbor probably did not like the idea that the car was going to be sitting in a driveway in his neighborhood. Whiny neighbor prolly makes lots of those types of calls.

Young men were polite. I held my breath when one said to go ahead & write ticket if they would get one, but it did not go any further than that.

As for a ticket, if one was written I would take it, go to court & have cop explain to the judge why he why he ticketed someone for washing car in own driveway. I would hope the judge would ask how many tickets he has issued to those washing cars in own driveway. :)

Guy needs to "decorate" his car and park it in front of the neighbor's house.

Not washing a car in the street would prevent a possible traffic hazard officer. Good grief. Another knuckle drager...

Its not about washing the car, its about a business.

Then the call to the LEOs should have been referencing that, with video taken from an unnoticed vehicle from at least a few parking spots away and across the street provided as evidence of an unlicensed business operating on private / residential property. NOT for washing a car.

My two cents from having to deal with LEOs and *spit* Lawyers over the years, not a personal attack.

Making sure the video evidence is recorded from the public streets or other public areas will prevent any 'spying' charges being lodged, as 'in the public view' equates to 'no expectation of privacy' in law.

I truly feel like I am living in a nightmare. What has happened to America???

Long, long gone. Same people in that Fox story said if people put up decorations inside their home, they should be made to keep the curtains closed so passerbys wouldn’t accidentally see them.

So the cop says it’s illegal to wash you car in your own driveway? At least the poor guy didn’t have his car shot full of holes on the pretext it tried to attack the cop.

But that is not what the law says. Sorry officer, you lose.

A police officer stretched the words of a law so he could shake down a citizen? Say it ain't so! I'm glad there wasn't a dog nearby.
