IAC, the media company owned by Barry Diller, says it has "parted ways" with Justine Sacco, the public relations executive whose tweet about AIDS in Africa went viral and upset the Internet.
Before Justine Sacco took off for Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday, she tweeted: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!"

Not so much that it upset the Internet, more like people were wondering how somebody could be so mind-blowingly stupid. The firing was about as no-brainer as it gets.
I have to say, the good thing is, if anybody is currently hating their job, nowadays we know the sure fire way to get fired.
Yeah, the line forms to the left for companies willing to hire her as a PR Exec. /s
Just another reason not to tweet or FB.
Twitter: Allowing people to post stupid comments worldwide since 2006.
Firing someone for a really lame joke like that??
That single comment will follow here forever now.
I agree. This is the kind of statement that warrants a firing, especially since this airhead seems to be ignorant of the fact that Africa was infected with AIDS through white homosexuals, who began the disease. No wonder Uganda is changing its laws.
It never ceases to amaze me that these people seem to think that nobody will see what they post on Twitter.
She was a PR Executive.
Let’s just say that won’t look good on a resume.
Given that South Africa has among the highest rate of AIDS among blacks that live there her post seems reasonable and something I might have said. I see no reason to fire her over that. So now we are supposed to pretend that SA doesn’t have a huge AIDS problem?
I don’t think she’s putting that on her resume
As if White people are immune to AIDS.
This chick isn’t smart enough to work in the mail room, much less be a PR Exec.
I think we all know what (and who) she did to get that job.
She’d better change her name, because once the company goes a cursory Google search on her name, it goes in the trash bin.
Women can change their name easier than men can.
Is that sexist?
It was a bad joke.
Remember the days of bad jokes?
We are getting to a point where certain groups such as gays cannot be offended, but other groups such as Christians can be offended at will. I am sick of it.
That being said, she is an idiot for tweeting that. One should look at their twitter account as a giant billboard for themselves. Wouldn’t post it on your personal billboard? Don’t tweet it.
I do not twitter nor FB.
I don’t have a problem with her comment either. Folish, perhaps, if her Twitter account links her to her job but otherwise what is the problem. For the earlier poster who thinks the aids virus got to Africa from white homosexuals; when this problem first came up, the virus was traced to monkeys. Go figure.
She could probably get a job in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
It’s called situational awareness.
In the past, you told a bad joke, generally you knew the people you were telling it to.
On Twitter, you are literally broadcasting it to every single person on the planet. And like it or not, in social media, everything you do ultimately reflects back on who you work for.
The weirdest part is that she was actually going to South Africa. Was she not worried for her safety after a statement like that? South Africans really don’t like white people anyway, and in the aftermath of Mandella’s death, its not really the best time to be saying something like that if you don’t want to be boiled alive.
Many homosexuals have been involved in bestiality. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got it from the monkeys!
Also I suspect she was two sheets to the wind when she Tweeted it.
Never Drink and Tweet.
Which is why I say ditch Twitter and Facebook entirely!
I heard that back in the 80s.
But if it’s true, any medico spreading the facts would be shunned by the establishment.
Or just take the approach of assuming that everything you say in Social Media can be read by current and potential future employers.
One of he comments from the CNN page:
If only drunk driving got this kind of response!
Just look at how they purged the APA of sane people after Kinsey’s crap was published.
let me guess, she is an Obama voter...
“this airhead seems to be ignorant of the fact that Africa was infected with AIDS through white homosexuals, who began the disease.”
No, the queers brought it back from africa.
I agree, it was a dumb joke. And one that I don't get. You could have strung some random words together including the words 'AIDs', and 'White', and gotten something similarly incomprehensible. I would've responded with a general 'huh?', and skipped the message. Certainly not worthy of being fired.
Oh well, I suppose that will learn her.... If you have a dumb comment you want to spit out, make sure it references Christians, or Americans, and you will get a free pass. Anything that might remotely be considered to be offensive to protected classes is a third rail and will get you fried (and fired).
For those of us old enough to remember, the initial AIDS epidemic was limited to four groups, crudely referred to as the 4H club: Haitians, homosexuals, hemophiliacs, and heroin users.
I thought it was that Canadian Male Stewardess that brought it here.
I don’t know how to search twitter. Also, don’t know why so many Freepers are against it.
How do you know? Are they posting about it on Huffington Post? Just wondering because of Phil Robertson getting so much flack for mentioning those two words in one sentence.
Twitter is like anything, It’s neutral, it’s what people do with it.
I dare not go to the steaming pile that is Huffington Compost. Its almost as bad as the British communist outfit, The Guardian.
Generally, minorities are MOST offended by comments that have some truth in them. If there was no truth in this whatsoever, most of them would laugh it off. And the truth is there is a high incidence of AIDS among blacks in many parts of Africa.
Uh, they did. (Chimps, specifically, so they'd appreciate it if you didn't call them "monkeys." LOL) The Aids advocates are rather unspecific about the mode of transfer, alluding to possible "blood transfer" due to hunting. They only say they "don't know" how the first AIDS case got that way.
You're right. Most people in N. ID still believe in freedom of speech.
You mean Standpoint?
I meant to type Sandpoint.
Is the government going after her for what she said? She can say whatever she wants, but good luck getting a job, I know I wouldn't hire her as even a janitor.
I was just making a joke about the Aryan Nation that was in the area.
If you are a PR executive and you post that on the internet, you are foolish. Companies can fire people when they do stupid things...this was stupid.
It’s close to it.
Bestiality is prevalent among underground fetish and porn communities, and we all know that’s the gritty underside of the homosexual movement. Put on a cloak of normalcy while underneath, the real slime dwells. Can’t let the public see that. Shows like Modern Family are an attempt to cover up the truth about the lifestyles many of these people are involved in.
They need help and this is not helping.
I never stated that homosexuals are all zoophiles. I said that such practices are very present in homosexual subculture just as BDSM and group sex are.
It is also not beyond the realm of possibility that the beginning of AIDS was human/animal intercourse.
