Marks & Spencer has told Muslim staff they can refuse to serve shoppers buying alcohol or pork, it has been revealed.
The chain has granted checkout workers in more than 700 stores permission to politely decline to serve customers for religious reasons.
Instead, shoppers are being asked to wait to pay for certain items at a different till.
The policy highlights a divide among the mainstream food retailers over whether religious staff should be excused from certain tasks.
In contrast to M&S, Sainsbury's has told Muslim staff that there is no reason why they cannot handle goods such as alcohol and pork - even if they are not allowed to eat or drink the products.

How would M&S treat an employee who refused to serve Muslims wearing hijabs because it made them uncomfortable?
One hast to be physically capable and willing to do what the job requires.
It’s a condition of employment.
If you are unable or unwilling to do a given job, with all that entails, you need to seek more suitable employment.
So are they going to have signs pointing out the full function checkout lines? Might be racist!
Load up cart full of goods, go to checkout, when they hit the hidden bacon and refuse, then just simply walk out of store leaving them to restock it all...
If bakers, photographers, and florists can't refuse gay weddings on religious grounds, then neither can Muslims refuse to serve alcohol on religious grounds over here.
But we'll soon see...
Okay. Fine. Just take the stuff and walk.
And repeat as necessary or non-Muslims could simply boycott M & S until business sense kicks in, if it ever does.
Well, it’s a private business, so it’s their call to make. I think it is a little bit absurd, however. My understanding of Halal food laws (which I admit is not complete) is that they forbid the consumption of pork or alcohol, not the sale of said products to other. I mean, my butcher is Jewish, and he has never had a problem selling me pork chops or Schweinhaxe.
Besides, as Super-Chicken often said: You knew the job was dangerous when you took it. :-)
(BTW, One wonders if the company has a pharmacy, and if a pharmacist working their would have the right to refuse sale of an abortifacient drug on religious grounds?)
That does not make any sense at all.
The $64,000 question is: can muslims refuse to serve gay customers??
>>I mean, my butcher is Jewish, and he has never had a problem selling me pork chops
How does he butcher the pig?
Are they Kosher?
It’s disturbing how many times I have read things like this and then have checked to see if it were satire.
or if a gay person refuses to be waited on by a Muslim since they believe Gays should be stoned, beheaded, hanged....
I often wonder why Gays, GLAD groups aren’t going after Muslims for their religious beliefs on Gays...
Yep. Figures. Let them try that here.
so phony...the 9-11 muslim hijackers were plastered on occasion
they harass employees and make them hide crosses because that may offend some. but muzzies get their religious crap protected?
their rulers deserve revolt and removal.
they have. muzzie cabdrivers refusing to take people with service dogs.
Here is the irony:
Marks and Spencers are the most famous Jewish business in the UK.
In that case I can refuse to go to a checkout with a towelhead.
M&S faces furious backlash from customers over Muslim policy
Marks & Spencer’s official Facebook page is deluged with messages from customers furious at bosses’ decision to let Muslim staff refuse to serve pork and alcohol to customers, as campaign is launched to boycott store
It does if you wish to ingratiate yourself with your new masters.
Heard about that it happened in the US. I think that people could sue the cab company. If those Mussies are hired to do a job they best by gosh do it or find some other kind of work.
Sikhs are not Muslim.
I like it. Let them experience the wasted time and money that comes from surrendering to Islamic supremacy demands.
Marks & Sparks has lost it big time, I see. Well, Brit friends, just F’m.
I bought my share of pork pies at M&S on a trip to London last month and will do that again. They also have self-checkout — even though this is ridiculous. Plenty of muslims in hijabs and even burkas shopping on Oxford St.
There are other retails stores to go to.
If this happened to me, I would leave my cart and leave.
Let the non-moslims put everything back.
And I would not darken their door again.
Actually, IIRC, I believe Target in Minnesota has been faced with this issue and succumbed to the Islam pressure groups to some extent.
More Islamic Intolerance...if Muslims cannot comply with a non Muslim nations mores and ways...they need to leave.
I misunderstood your post, then. Sorry bout that.
Isn’t Marks & Spencer worse then A&E?
:-) n/p..sometimes I shoot comments w/o any context.
Target has that rule? I guess they don’t want me as a customer.

Seems to be some confooshun on just what M&S’ policy is:
UK retailer M&S faces boycott after Muslim worker refused to sell alcohol
“A spokeswoman said the company’s policy for many years had been to try to accommodate staff of all religions by finding them roles where conflicts would not arise.
“On this occasion this person’s preferences were not taken into account and she ended up on the tills, which was a mistake,” the spokeswoman said. “We would like to apologize for any resulting confusion and reassure our customers that this was an isolated incident.”
or I could leave and go somewhere else.
I can see liberal heads exploding when they ponder such...
After one reads this story you have to ask yourself if Muslims can refuse to handle or serve customers regarding port and alcohol then WHY is it NOT legitimate and LEGAL for a baker in Colorado to refuse to make a wedding cake for gays?
