NC:Charges expected against men shot at Monroe business

MONROE, N.C. -- Two men were shot in the parking lot of a Monroe business early Friday morning and in a very unusual move, the shooter called 911 and told the operator he shot someone.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. in the parking lot of the Tyson Foods plant.

According to Monroe police, a man told investigators two other men attacked him. He said he fought back and fired shots. One man was hit four times. The other was struck once.

"Officers were on scene and found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were transported. One was shot several times. One was shot once," said Peter Hovanec with the City of Monroe.

It appears the two men pulled open the shooter’s car door and pistol whipped him, police say. He responded by opening fire. Both men, 24-year-old Jarvis Miller and 23-year-old Jermaine Blakeny, were shot in the buttocks and they ran. One of the men was also shot in the arm. They were transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and were both conscious and alert when they left the scene, according to police.

Leaving the scene can be a smart move. It is also usually best to be the first to call the police.

This was a much better outcome than that of the recent carjacking in the Short Hills Mall (NJ) where the car owner was shot to death by the perps.

Unusual move to call 911? That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do when you discharge a firearm in self-defense. You should only leave the scene if it’s unsafe to stay at the scene. Otherwise critical evidence could missed, lost, or destroyed.

Now the rub becomes whether Tyson Foods allows employees to have firearms in their car in Tyson parking lot. It’s been at the center of court fights and legislative action in my state with the final resolution coming down on the side of employees, for the most part. I find it good that the employee was able to defend himself but it could become a case of winning the battle (successful self-defense) only to lose the war (get fired.) Personally, the choice of taking a potentially life-threatening beating or needing to find another job is an easy choice to make.

“This was a much better outcome than that of the recent carjacking in the Short Hills Mall (NJ) where the car owner was shot to death by the perps.”

Unfortunately, NJ prides itself on having some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the USA. We’re allowed to have a gun in our car ONLY when transporting it to & from a gun range (no stops in between) and firearms must be in a LOCKED box or INACCESSIBLE area of the car (i.e., trunk). So, open target season on citizens in NJ as folks in Newark & Camden, and even yuppie areas like Short Hills, can tell you.

A summary of our laws: http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-laws/new-jersey.aspx

The one on the left looks like Michelle and the one on the right has the arrogant look of his father.

He didn’t just leave the scene..he left the city and drove to the next town (although, really not THAT far away). I’m surprised Wingate U. didn’t go into lockdown.

All in all though, I’m glad he was able to defend himself against these thugs. I’m guessing they were surprised when he started shooting.
