Navy sailors have radiation sickness after Japan rescue

By Laura Italiano and Kerry Murtha

December 22, 2013 | 6:40am

Navy sailor Lindsay Cooper knew something was wrong when billows of metallic-tasting snow began drifting over USS Ronald Reagan.

“I was standing on the flight deck, and we felt this warm gust of air, and, suddenly, it was snowing,” Cooper recalled of the day in March 2011 when she and scores of crewmates watched a sudden storm blow toward them from the tsunami-torn coast of Fukushima, Japan.

The tall 24-year-old with a winning smile didn’t know it then, but the snow was caused by the freezing Pacific air mixing with a plume of radioactive steam from the city’s shattered nuclear reactor

I’m sure Paul Ryan is going to cut their disability if they get out on a medical.

WTF are they risking the U. S. S. Ronald Reagan for? The crew shouldn’t have been exposed to this level of radiation. What the hell is going on here? This sounds extremely reckless.

"By the time the Reagan realized it was contaminated and tried to shift location, the radioactive plume had spread too far to be quickly outrun.

“We have a multimillion-dollar radiation-detection system, but . . . it takes time to be set up and activated,” Cooper said.

In other words it wasn't turned on.

The ship should have been moved south of the plume and the decontamination equipment up and running before it ever got to Japan.

Another Secy of the Navy Mabus screw-up. He is totally incompetent and should be kheelhauled in that contaminated water. Put a little glow in his cheeks, and I don’t mean those on his face.

I guess Paul Ryan despises these men because they were too stupid to go inside when the fallout came down.

Tepco had simulation data that projected the plume would go given current weather patterns but decided not to release it to the public. The could have been protected. Does anyone believe that the crew were the only people harmed by Fukushima? What about all the locals who headed northwest when the explosion occurred (right into the plume) and then set up camp in a highly contaminated zone.
Japan just rammed through state secrecy and they had to be concealing data on illnesses even before the new law passed.

What an outrage!

The people in charge knew where they were going.

The radiation detector should have been online before they got near the area and the entire crew should have been given Patassium Iodide pills greatly reducing the chances of being harmed.

Total incompetence. The people in charge need to be held accountable.

Our local fire department routinely operates radiation detection. Recently, they had the cops pull over a “hot” car that turned out to contain a guy coming home from a thyroid test. How difficult could it be have a basic level of detection in constant operation?

There are simply no excuses for what happened.

It is an outrage through and through.

This story is entirely made up. Do you really think there are no working radiation detection systems on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier?

The ship was contaminated...along with the drinking water and personnel. They were left out in the plume almost 3 weeks before a decision was made. The ports in Japan, Guam and Philippines would not allow them in port because they were too radioactive.

The jet stream carried that plume right to the United States/Canada coastline and right across the states by March 25, 2011. Plenty of iodine-131 and Cesium-137. Reactor 1 had a core meltdown 5 hours after the earthquake. A couple days later, unit 3 reaction had a literal nuclear explosion that blew most of the core (uranium/plutonium) into the atmosphere. At least 100 tons was aerosolized. Unburned fuel from unit 3 has been found over 250 miles from the site (in little black puddles). SFP #4 had two zirconium fires. Lots more, but that is a quick run down.

Check out Project Tomodachi for more information. There is also a daily set of updates at ENENews. Many of the people commenting on the posts are strongly anti-nuke. Many are also seasoned professionals in the nuclear power business. You'll have to sort out which ones hit your credibility threshold. Suffice to say, you won't get coverage anywhere else. One of my co-workers has studied the Hiroshima/Nagasaki events for over 25 years. He recently was added to the Tomodachi studies.

Read through the post and comments on the article New model shows U.S. was hit by Fukushima cloud that dispersed little over Pacific — Gundersen: Authorities knew about hot particles and didn’t warn public; Could have worn air masks, instead it’s stuck in their lungs; Helicopters did secret survey along coast (PHOTO & AUDIO) to get a sense of the characters and level of expertise.

I’d like to know how far off shore the ship was.

Can a plume of steam actually cause snow one or two miles away?

The wind direction is also curious.

If the sea air was cooler than the land air, I would expect the “snow cloud” to be slowly moving inland.

And considering the obvious radiation risk, I find it hard to believe that the ship’s officers had no interest in the wind direction and had no radiation monitors deployed.
