December 23, 2013: In late 2013 the Russian navy announced that plans to refurbish its nine Akula class SSNs (nuclear attack subs) would take longer than expected. In fact, the first Akula will be out of service for three years for the upgrade. The other eight subs will get done more quickly, but the entire job will take at least a decade and probably closer to fifteen years. The refurb involves replacing most if the wiring and electrical systems as well as the missile handling equipment. Many mechanical systems will be replaced of upgraded. The end result will be a much quieter sub and thats very important in undersea warfare.
In early 2013 the Russian Navy announced more optimistic plans for upgrading its nine Akulas. The first of these entered service in 1984, and fifteen were built. Several were cancelled after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and some have been retired already. The latest Akula entered service two years ago and was then leased to India.
These 8,100 ton boats were to be replaced by the new Graney (Yasen) class subs...

It’s good that the Russians are having an attack sub crises. I hope it extends to the rest of their military buildup.
Nothing lift’s my spirits like Ivan’s military problems.
I remember reading that the Russians were installing small chapels in their subs. Given all the catastrophes that have befallen the Russian submarine fleet the past decade, I suppose they thought they needed all the help they could get.
Our current administration does not seriously care about what needs to be done in order to make our military stronger. It’s out to undermine it and make it weaker.
In fact recent development in US industry is much alike to that the Soviets had in 1990s.

A video has surfaced of Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama talking on his plans for strategic issues such as nuclear weapons and missile defense.
The full text from the video, as released, reads as follows:
Thanks so much for the Caucus4Priorities, for the great work you've been doing. As president, I will end misguided defense policies and stand with Caucus4Priorities in fighting special interests in Washington.
First, I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. end it, not win it]
Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.
I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.
I will not weaponize space.
I will slow our development of future combat systems.
And I will institute an independent "Defense Priorities Board" to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.
You know where I stand. I've fought for open, ethical and accountable government my entire public life. I don't switch positions or make promises that can't be kept. I don't posture on defense policy and I don't take money from federal lobbyists for powerful defense contractors. As president, my sole priority for defense spending will be protecting the American people. Thanks so much.

Vladimir Putin praised Cold War-era scientists on Thursday for stealing U.S. nuclear secrets so that United States would not be the world's sole atomic power, in comments reflecting his vision of Russia as a counterweight to U.S. power.
Spies with suitcases full of data helped the Soviet Union build its atomic bomb, he told military commanders.
"You know, when the States already had nuclear weapons and the Soviet Union was only building them, we got a significant amount of information through Soviet foreign intelligence channels," Putin said, according to state-run Itar-Tass.
"The were carrying the information away not on microfilm but literally in suitcases. Suitcases!"
Putin's remarks referred to the dawn of the Cold War more than half a century ago, but they echoed a message he has made loud and clear more recently: that the United States needs to be restrained, and Russia is the country to do it.

Appeasement: From ObamaCare to recess appointments, honoring the Constitution has not been an administration hallmark. But when it comes to betraying secrets to mollify the Russians, it becomes a document the president hides behind.
It was bad enough that the 2012 defense authorization bill signed by President Obama set America on a downward spiral of military mediocrity.
He also issued a signing statement, something he once opposed, saying that language in the bill aimed at protecting top-secret technical data on the U.S. Standard Missile-3 linchpin of our missile defense might impinge on his constitutional foreign-policy authority.
Section 1227 of the defense law prohibits spending any funds that would be used to give Russian officials access to sensitive missile-defense technology as part of a cooperation agreement without first sending Congress a report identifying the specific secrets, how they'd be used and steps to protect the data from compromise.
The president is required to certify that any technology shared will not be passed on to third parties such as China, North Korea or Iran, that the Russians will not use transferred secrets to develop countermeasures and that the Russians are reciprocating in sharing missile-defense technology.

U.S. Builds New Missile Defenses In Asia
Now, this may surprise you, but *everything* that 0bama tells you is always a lie.
When he says that he will close Gitmo: lie.
When he says that you can keep your health insurance: lie.
When he says that he will cut our missile defenses: lie.
...now you know.
MOSCOW The United States has effectively canceled the final phase of a Europe-based missile defense system that was fiercely opposed by Russia and cited repeatedly by the Kremlin as a major obstacle to cooperation on nuclear arms reductions and other issues.
Russian officials here have so far declined to comment on the announcement, which was made in Washington on Friday by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as part of a plan to deploy additional ballistic missile interceptors to counter North Korea. The cancellation of some European-based defenses will allow resources to be shifted to protect against North Korea.
Aides to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said there would be no reaction until early next week, when they expect to be briefed by American officials.
But Russian news accounts quickly raised the possibility that the decision could portend a breakthrough in what for years has been a largely intractable dispute between Russia and the United States. A headline by the Itar-Tass news agency declared, U.S. abandons fourth phase of European missile defense system that causes the greatest objections from Russia....

Obama also promised to "fundamentally transform the United States of America". He's pretty much keeping his promise, no?
In any case, Obama was probably heavily pushed by people at the Pentagon to do what is necessary regarding Iran and North Korea. Because he’s always been a supporter of the Russians, going back to his younger years, growing up under the influence of Soviet devotee, communist Frank Marshall Davis, and throughout his college days in the mid-80s when he was part of the pro-Soviet, anti-US, anti-Reagan, movement.
We’re going to experience the same lack of qualified workers that they are. Obama has so damaged the military industrial complex that thousands of engineers and managers have moved on to other jobs. We’ll play hell rebuilding that force.
Russian subs are death traps. The Russian doctrine seems to be build a lot but don’t care about quality.
Same with Tanks.
I read the article expecting that Ivan had lost another sub. And since it's Christmas, I'm glad they didn't.
5.56mm
Wouldn’t it be as/more cost effective to just build new subs? I have no military background, so I’m just wondering what the refurb cost is vs new... Merry Christmas, all!

The more mouths to feed, the less food for communist party members.
Most lessons, especially important ones are learned the hard way.
The Central Planners and Progressives never seem to consider that in their grandiose schemes.
