Atheists, work with us for peace, Pope says on Christmas
Reuters ^ | 12/25/13 | Philip Pullella

Pope Francis, celebrating his first Christmas as Roman Catholic leader, on Wednesday called on atheists to unite with believers of all religions and work for "a homemade peace" that can spread across the world...

He said that people of other religions were also praying for peace, and - departing from his prepared text - he urged atheists to join forces with believers.

"I invite even non-believers to desire peace. (Join us) with your desire, a desire that widens the heart. Let us all unite, either with prayer or with desire, but everyone, for peace," he said, drawing sustained applause from the crowd.

Francis's reaching out to atheists and people of other religions is a marked contrast to the attitude of former Pope Benedict, who sometimes left non-Catholics feeling that he saw them as second-class believers.

I do not see anything remarkable about Francis asking everyone to work for peace. This reads more like a veiled attack on Benedict.

Francis, I hope, is playing with the media. He must know that in Christ alone is true peace....all else, however well-meaning, is enmity with God.

"I invite even non-believers to desire peace. (Join us) with your desire, a desire that widens the heart. Let us all unite, either with prayer or with desire, but everyone, for peace,"

What a moron or, at best, a manipulative cynic. Who is waging the fiercest, longest running, deadliest, most intractable war in the world? True Believers, mostly of Islam, to be sure, but "religious" people none the less.

Haha, peace on Earth will only come when there is one man left.

I am starting to wonder if this pope even believes in Jesus Christ, as he seems way over concerned with conditions and comforts of people here on earth and I haven’t seen him all that concerned with people’s souls.

I read the other day that Francis stated that “all religions are equal”. That is a jaw-dropping thing for a Pope to say, especially when Christianity is competing with the likes of Islam for the soul of the planet. He is also heavy on the non-judgementalism. You add all this up, and it seems like Francis is trying to deconstruct the Catholic church. To what end, I have no idea.

Did the Roman Pontiff actually single out atheists or "non-believers?" The latter encompasses a much larger group, and it may be the despairing French writers really can't distinguish the difference.

The slug did not reach the threshold necessary for me to follow a Reuters link at this time. The Press has shown a marked retarded tendency of late with regard to describing a leftward tilt in this Pope's doctrine that doesn't hold up under closer examination.

The subtle differences between Francis and Benedict XVI are so open to anyone's honest investigation I see no reason to strain at merely guessing at them second hand through any post-modern journalist's spectacles.

This was one of the most pathetic Christmas messages I have ever heard. Including the example of illegal immigrants overwhelming Italy. The only thing missing was a call for those nasty Americans to let every one in.

“Grant that migrants in search of a dignified life may find acceptance and assistance. May tragedies like those we have witnessed this year, with so many deaths at Lampedusa, never occur again!”

I think he is Communist and has corrupted the church. All religions do become equal as an idea in the end of days.

I hadn’t seen that, and I keep up with the more orthodox side of Catholicism. Would like a source if you could locate one.
