Hedge fund titan, giant of philanthropy leaps to his death after stroke (Robert W. Wilson)

Multimillionaire philanthropist Robert W. Wilson, 86, took his own life Monday by throwing himself from his luxury Upper West Side high-rise apartment, just a few months after suffering a debilitating stroke, sources said.

The former Wall Street hedge fund titan — who donated hundreds of millions to charity — left a note before leaping at about 11 a.m. from the 16th floor of the famed San Remo, which overlooks Central Park West, cops said.

“He was 86 and suffered a stroke a few months ago,” said Wilson’s friend, Stephen Viscusi.

“He always said he didn’t want to suffer, and when the time came, he would be ready.”

No pedestrians @ CPW @ 11am? Imagine if he’d crashed onto pedestrians, or a car/bus driving up CPW..or did he jump onto the side street.... as if there are no pedestrians there. For a philanthropist, his final act was grossly selfish.

This has to be the favorite place of the meanest people on the planet. Everything is a joke, and the meaner the better. I don’t know why I still hang on here. Maybe a New Year’s Resolution?

Just goes to show, no matter how rich you are the one law you can’t ignore is gravity.

OK. I looked at a photo of the San Remo. His apt was above the terraces levels so his fall would not have been from the 16th floor to the street, only to a neighbor’s terrace @ 12th floor.

Then people who knowingly eat fatty foods, smoke and otherwise live unhealthy lives which eventually die as a result of their actions will meet the same fate as you suggest.

It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop at the bottom.

Unless you didn't jump far enough out to clear window sills, ledges, lightpoles and flagpoles on the way down.

Yuk, that is a really messy/colorful way to go: a chunk at a time and ricocheting off of other objects. When I worked in Midtown NYC at Rock Ctr in the 70s & 80s (lived in NJ), there was a jumper (among 4-5 others I remember) who landed on a canvass awning over a storefront and bounced down on to the sidewalk. We’d just turned the corner at 52nd St/Ave Americas (6th Ave) coming back from lunch at “21” to work, and saw it happen. He hobbled away as police/ambulances were arriving. I remember hearing on the news that he’d jumped from the 25th floor window. Hell of an awning.

The paper reports that he has donated more than $100 million each to four different charities: The Nature Conservancy, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the World Monuments Fund.

The Nature Conservancy has assets of $3 billion (tax-exempt) and worldwide control of some 90 million acres. Twelve million acres in the U.S., an area the size of Switzerland.

Operating covertly under a variety of names, TNC “saved” Virginia’s Eastern Shore, putting a largely minority labor force out of work, deepening the scourge of poverty in the area. The “saved” islands were “served with opulent showplaces built for rich clients, all unaffordable to the people of the Eastern Shore.”

Mineral, gas and oil rights were acquired by TNC under the guise of “saving” lands. For instance, TNC “saved” an endangered bird only to pump at least $5.5 million worth of oil and gas royalties, so far, from beneath its habitat. A million acres of timberland in Maine and New Hampshire are logged by TNC.

A swath of American land larger than the state of Delaware was traded to a foreign power without a word from the American press and public. Two million acres of TNC land in the United States was swapped to the government of Brazil in exchange for Amazon rainforest.

The Environmental Protection Agency currently funds the Environmental Defense Fund, for the purpose of *suing* the EPA, to force it to comply with radical leftist environmentalism. That is, the EPA funds a radical organization to force the EPA do what it is not permitted by law to do.

Stroke victims may still be able to move about, although probably not very easily. In this case he almost certainly had nursing assistance present, or maybe a close associate, to collude with his wishes, as in assisted suicide.

It can be pretty rough but move on to another thread if it bothers you; life is too short. As for Wilson, maybe all that’s left of him is decomposing, perhaps there is a soul in a good or dreadful place. Maybe we’ll find out...or not.
