“I thought he was smarter than that. But since then he has proved me wrong again and again.”

Most kids will do that.

There was another incident (last year?) similar to this. A father shot his son when he was sneaking into his house. Dad didn’t know son was out.

This should be a lesson to offspring living at home with gun totting parents. Parents will protect their property. Parents sooner or later will find out offspring sneaked out of the house.

Horrible. No one should even consider armed home defense without having adequate lighting, optics, cameras and/or other ways of identifying someone outside or inside of a residence. And if no one is attacking or breaking in, a resident should hold his or her fire.

Many people are not acting sanely. Young folks sometimes sneak around neighborhoods while playing at night. That’s no reason to get hysterical and shoot them. Police, sometimes answering calls of burglaries in progress, will cross property lines in the dark. Residents should be aware of who is out there and whether or not they’re agressors against the residents before using violence.

"this guy was in the military"

I agree with your comment. Well said. But there is this detail from the article: "an active-duty health service officer." Some 5% or less of military personnel are in real combat specialties (that is, combat soldiers), the few weeks of basic training for many notwithstanding (initial training for a few being much more difficult and combat-oriented than for most).

This is the part of the article that leaves me a bit suspicious and scratching my head:

The victim, of Colorado Springs, was gunned down after a burglary was reported at her family's home.

Police spokesman Larry Herbert said the girl's stepfather fired the shot, but said it was unclear if he had mistaken the teen for a burglar.

Did he call the police to report a burglary and then go outside and shoot her???

The anti-gunners will use every opportunity and tragic events such as this to try and overturn stand your ground and castle doctrine laws. I’m sick of hearing the term “make my day law.” These laws don’t mean you can shoot or kill someone without consequences.

I wonder what relations were between stepdad and stepdaughter. Who the hell *shoots* at a living person they can’t see clearly? He’s either a pantywaist (shoots at anything that moves), a moron, or a murderer.

I wonder what relations were between stepdad and stepdaughter.

Yep -- they can't be good if she is sneaking in the house at 6:00 AM after a night out and she is only 14.

Apparently he called the police at 6:00 AM to report a burglary in progress. Then while he knew the police were on the way he goes down into the basement with his gun and shoots "the burglar" that the police were coming to apprehend -- after supposedly failing to turn on the light switch to the basement to locate his target.

Amazing how he was able to hit the target two out of three shots center of mass in a dark basement without the lights on.

If I'm the police I would look at the stepdad as wanting to teach his stepdaughter a lesson for defying curfew and the call to 911 to report the burglary as evidence of premeditation.

A 29 year old male with a 14 year old stepdaughter shoots her multiple times, killing her, after reportedly mistaking her for a burglar. I don’t know what, but something’s not right, here. There may be something he didn’t want known.

She was 14. She probably left the same way she returned, and he likely had no clue she was even gone from the home. You’ve obviously never been a 14 year old girl.

Yep —

He calls the police at 6:00 AM to report a burglary in progress.

But then he doesn’t wait for the police to arrive.

He doesn’t lock the door to the basement to keep the burglar in the basement.

He doesn’t go upstairs to check his stepdaughter’s bedroom to make sure it’s not her.

He decides to shoot the person down there with the police on the way.

Why???

I wonder if, if things get tight for the shooter, there will be a claim of Ptsd ?

I can’t believe that it took TWO pixies from journalism school to write this piece of crap.

They're British writers. They wake up every morning shocked to find that the silly Americans still won't follow their sage advice and ban guns. Everyday they wonder why we won't emulate their civilized example and disarm the populace so that everyone can enjoy the experience being beaten by drunken thugs intent upon stealing our mobiles.

Yes, that does arouse suspicions. Reminds me of one of many bad calls, long ago. It’s best to stay in one place, if possible, until police arrive. And prepare to be unarmed when answering the door for the cops.
