First-time claims for state unemployment benefits retreated sharply in the latest week after hitting their highest level since late March in the prior week, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The number of initial claims fell 42,000 to 338,000 in the week ended Dec. 21. The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for claims to fall to about 345,000. This is the largest drop in weekly claims since November 2012.
Analysts cautioned not to read too much into the data

Remember, just 2 weeks ago, jobless claims were reported to have fallen below 300,000 ( to 298,000 ) for the first time in 4 years, then the week after, it went back up to 378,000 !! And so, here we are once again...
Yeah, what is the usual delay before they are “revised” back up? They may be a little lower the last several weeks due to some stores taking on temporary holiday help.
“Analysts cautioned not to read too much into the data”
.........
Its called seasonal holiday employment. Is 0boober going to take credit for Christmas now ?’
“retreated sharply”.
So if I called Obama everything under the sun and the next week I just called him a SOB I suppose the reporting would be my opinion on Obama has “drastically changed”.
Is 0boober going to take credit for Christmas now ?
Of course he is.
As usual it’s all in the wording. “Claims” fell only tells you exactly what it says. The claims fell. Doesn’t mean squat except that folks ran out of their “right” to 99 weeks of unemployment bennies. Maybe for ‘14 chuck the schmuck can get that “right” bumped up to 126 weeks. Of course next Tuesday they’ll be revised with no fanfare “unexpectedly”.
The four week moving average is up a little bit...
Whoever it is that once said “NUMBERS DON’T LIE” never met Barack Obama.
The Obama Numble Game - Just fill in the blanks.
Unexpectedly!
FIRST TIME claims...
These are the newly unemployed.
It’s all BS at this point.
I don’t believe them. Not a single word that is emanated from any agency as long as Obastard is running the show. It is all lies.
Doesn’t work that way. Initial claims is just that . . . if you want to consider whose benefits ran out, you need to look at continuing claims.
Yes as soon as that seasonal help is laid off after Jan 1st you will see the numbers go back up again. Happens every year.
Does anyone above the intelligence of a common worm believe anything this administration says about anything? Liar...liar...pants of fire!
Whenever the ‘new’ number jumps or declines by some 30,000 or more, that is suspicious.
Of course, the BLS has been blaming the California computer system whenever big variations have occurred.
42,000 drop? Sounds like another SWAG.
IOW, not as many folks were laid off the week before Christmas as expected. Well, unless you are talking about the Grinch, that would follow, no? And next week’s figures about this week containing Christmas right smack in the middle will be down, too. After all, the unemployment office was probably closed for 2 days.
Is anyone out there filing for unemployment Christmas Week? Seriously?
It's going to be a bloodbath, with consumers bracing for the impact of losing their health insurance.
