Full Title:The Return of History We are not locked in a new Cold War, but China and Russia are bringing back Cold War tactics.
Is this a new Cold War?
Every time I say anything to anyone anywhere about Russia nowadays, thats what Im asked. And there is a clear answer: No. This is not a new Cold War. Neither the United States nor Europe is locked in a deadly, apocalyptic competition with Russia, China, or anyone else. We are not fighting proxy wars. The world has not been divided into two Orwellian halves, democrats vs. communists.
But although we are not fighting a new Cold War, the tactics of the old Cold War are now, at the dawn of 2014, suddenly being deployed in a manner not seen since the early 1980s. We in the United States may not believe that we are engaged in an ideological struggle with anybody, but other people are engaged in an ideological struggle with us. We in the United States may not believe that there is any real threat to our longtime alliance structures in Europe and Asia, but other people think those alliances are vulnerable and have set out to undermine them.

I've also read about magazine journalists, authors who have several puff piece stories of no particular journalistic distinction kept in some folder in their documents directory, to have ready to go when their "article" quota requires them to cough something up, about 1,000 words long on some global issue, especially around the end of the year when they're either out of town or simply don't feel like wrting anything that is too taxing on the brain.

Oh and it's democrat/communists vs. Americans.
Sorry, that should be “She”.
Is this the same Applebaum who wrote a book about
You would have thought she would have learned something
China never called a truce, they just switched tactics since the old ones were not working. Russia did call a truce for a bit but then Putin got control.
If it walks like a duck,
quacks like a duck,
looks like a duck...
China becoming more formidable threat in southeast Asia, Japan should re-arm, abolish their article 9 of their constitution, arm their submarines with nuke-tipped SLBMs, built 15 Izumo class LHDs, make variant of F-35Bs instead of F-35As. Reagan called that peace through strength.
It was noted in another article today that China can hit targets in India, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines with cruise missiles fired from its military aircraft flying in its own airspace. I am sure the release of the military info likely came from the communist regime in China itself, as part of their psyops on the public in their neighbors.
This must be some kind of mistake. The Neocon war mongers are telling us Iran is our most dangerous enemy, too dangerous to even talk with. Why bring up China and Russia at a time like this? No need to worry about those that already have nuclear weapons. Those thinking about them for years are more of a problem. Maybe Iran, like Iraq, is doable. Insanity.
The Cold War is BACK ON, whether or not Washington a ready to acknowledge it. China and Russia are taking account of all those ‘weak links’ holding our democracy together. All it would take may be as simple as overloading and thus shutting down our power grid or internet on one entire coast of the continent. China might test us first, by playing around with Hawaii, or officially taking military control of Taiwan and watch as O does nothing but run his mouth and shake his finger at the cameras.
They maybe just simulating capabilities but I don't think they're that crazy to shot it now. In 1996 a Chicom general threatened to vaporize Los Angeles but I doubt their ICBM could even reach Guam or Hawaii. If Chinese sinks a Japanese warship or shotdown Japanese aircraft in international airspace or water, it will cause for Japan to abolish the article 9 of their constitution.
Japan has one of the largest navies in the world, they recently launched a helo-carrier, perfectly capable of carrying the F-35 Marine variant.
Who would have guessed that after 70 years we would consider that great news.
Isn’t this like we are not locked in a new crusade
but Iran and Islam are using jihad tactics against us?
We just haven’t deigned to engage yet.
Certain parties in Iran ‘have not liked Americans’ for a long time, going all the way back to the spring of 1968, Sirhan Sirhan who (alledgedly) killed Robert Kennedy. Go further back to the end of WW2, when Rooselvelt and others sliced their middle eastern lands up, a put new names on those lands. Resentment has simmered against the west ever since. Occasionally, it boils over!
I think it’s because we haven’t had a president this simpleminded in foreign policy since Carter, and in fact he’s proving to be even more childlike than the peanut farmer. Clinton looks strong by comparison. Weakness invites aggression.
Sirhan Sirhan was “Palestinian.” (Actually Jordanian, there is no such thing as “Palestinian.”) You’re right, however, about the post WW2 map-drawing. Much of the strife in SW Asia is likewise a result of similar map-drawing done in the wake of the British decolonization. Pakistan should never have been a country, but rather a dozen or so.
China has more warships and warplanes, Japan build better ships, has less but quality.
There’s poll at JapanToday.com dated Dec 12, 2012: “Do you think Japan should scrap the war-renouncing Article 9 from its Constitution?”
Those were the days when China was then a sleeping dragon. Imagine the situation where Japan goes to war with communist China, a nation with nuclear weapons, and North Korea, a nation also with nuclear weapons?
I think Japan should re-arm with nukes, too, build at least 15 JDS Izumo’s, F-35A, F-35B and F-35C variants of their own, etc.
So 0bama yells at China for letting Snowden go to Russia, downs the President of Boliva’s jet trying to get Snowden leaving Russia, spies on Russia and China...reads all of their emails...flies B-52s over Chinese airspace, and just about goes to war with Russia in Syria.
...and we’re supposed to believe that it isn’t 0bama’s fault that Russia and China see a return to the Cold War?!
