A Rare Elected Voice for Socialism Pledges to Be Heard in Seattle
NY Times ^ | 12/28/13 | KIRK JOHNSON

SEATTLE — People are used to liberals running things around here. But nobody reckoned with Kshama Sawant. Ms. Sawant, a 41-year-old economics teacher and immigrant from India, took a left at liberal and then kept on going — all the way to socialism.

**SNIP**

But Kshama Sawant (pronounced SHAH-mah sah-WANT) heartily embraces the label. Ask her about almost any problem facing America today, and her answer will probably include the “S” word as the best and most reasonable response. Socialism is the path to real democracy, she says. Socialism protects the environment. Socialism is the best hope for young people who have seen their options crushed by the tide of low-wage, futureless jobs in the post-recession economy.

The Indian immigrants I've met in this country (and quite a few, at that), have little comprehension of traditional American values. In general, they are religious CNN watchers, lovers of the Bent One, and are from a communist/socialist background and mindset. This piece of work fits this stereotype of mine.

American is still the Great Exception.

The Democratic Party is one of the very mainstream parties not to belong to the Socialist International.

Every every other Western country has a socialist or social democratic party holding elected office.

This has a lot to do with the individualism of American culture and the way the middle class developed in America. Workers were always enfranchised in America and they had to go through none of the struggles for democracy and equal rights that led to socialism in Europe in the 19th Century.

Marxism is dead and few socialists/social democrats advocate class warfare and complete dispossession of the rich today. It simply doesn’t win votes in Western societies. In the rest of the world though social welfare is not seen as a handout but as an obligation of society to take care of every one and ensure the vagaries of the markets don’t have impact on people’s survival.

Its an idea that hasn’t caught in America. But the fact its now possible to openly elect socialists/social democrats here show with the changing demographics in American life, America is going to become a lot more like Europe and neighboring Canada in the things that matter.

Using Marx’s ideas (be they “socialist”, “communist” or whatever) to help the middle class is like trying to use Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.

Thanks Libloather. And other than the massive bloodshed required to impose socialism, and to keep it propped in power, it accomplishes nothing but self-congratulation.

America is a Democratic Republic . . .

Quite right, and it began the moment the 17th amendment was ratified.

For the record, the USA was founded as a Republic. No ceremony was performed, no certificate issued that changed our status to Democracy. The subject came up during the 19th Century Socialist attack on the American culture.

The Progressive Woodrow Wilson was quite taken with the term and he probably influenced the unofficial title transfer during the conscious, that is, early period of his presidency.

The opportunistic Democrats picked right up on it. The Republicans, much like todays version, looked the other way.

Notice how the word "freedom", or "liberty", is missing from her speech.

Precisely. Her "paradise" ends in CHAOS and DEATH to those who oppose power as it is taken from the people!

Why, yes, look at all those great jobs in Vietnam. The Chinese (aren’t they socialist?) were moving their factories to Vietnam ( aren’t they socialist?) because they could get away with paying the Vietnamese workers $100 a month. That is less than one dollar an hour. There’s a socialist workers paradise for you.

In the 2008 election, Indian citizens voted 90% for Obama.

Asian Indians, by the way, are the best educated immigrant group in America.

That number is from a Pew Research survey on all immigrant voters in 2008, and it was released shortly before the 2010 election.

Seattle has always had a hardcore marxist faction, esp. when the Communist Party USA controlled ILWU (International Longhshoremen Workers Union) of Soviet operative Harry Bridges controlled the docks from the 1930’s onward.

Nice to see that an immigrant from India is continuing on his policies.

Well, Seattle, you let dopeheads and commies and liberal freaks vote, and look what you’ve got.

Enjoy your just deserts.

Beautiful city but full of commies, druggies and liberal assholes. Been there, saw it, didn’t stay.
