While small in scale, scattered protests targeting buses filled with tech workers have highlighted a larger issue: the growing gap between those benefiting from the Bay Area's tech boom and those who have been left behind.
The protesters insist their anger is not aimed at the tech workers themselves, but rather at the inequities highlighted by the tech industry, which generates enormous wealth that provides big paychecks and attractive perks -- including free transportation and free gourmet food -- to workers whose ability to pay has helped push up rents. Many of those outside the tech industry, meanwhile, have seen their rents rise beyond their reach as their salaries have remained flat, or even fallen, over recent years.

Well gee perhaps those people should go to school and learn a skill, then they could work for a big company which abuses its employees.
These whiners were ‘left behind’ because they refuse to provide value for the supposed ‘work’ they offer, actually called something else by us real workers out here - entitlements.
Sounds like the techies need their wages lowered to make things more “=”. If we’re real lucky, before we know it everybody, not matter what they do, will make between 15 and 18 dollars an hour. Except, of course, the soroses, algores, “lyin’ king’s”, buffets, etc. (not to mention those evil Koch bros) :>)
but rather at the inequities highlighted by the tech industry, which generates enormous wealth that provides big paychecks and attractive perks — including free transportation and free gourmet food
The reality is those “inequities are not brought about by the “tech industry”, but by the people themselves. In a free peoples you have the opportunity to rise as high as you capable of or sink as low as you allow..........
Put down the Playstation and pick up the books.
You mean 12 years (or likely less) of Public Education with at least ten years (or likely more) of Video Game playing skills did not qualify these ‘left behind’ people to get a six figure salary and a ‘free ride to work’ every day? I’m shocked....................
The big lesson is, those on the bus are workers with value as opposed to those standing around protesting.
I didn’t spend 4years in Engineering school to distribute wealth.
Gee, I thought mass transit was saving the planet.
If these companies obliged them and left, the rest of the jobs in the Bay Area would dry up very rapidly.
Why not set the minimum hourly wage to be equal to the average hourly wage of a US Senator?
Thus, everybody could earn a “living wage,” everybody would be equal, Labor unions would no long be needed, and the responsibility of National Wage Control would rest firmly in the able hands of the US Senate Majority Leader.
Lenin would be soooooooo proud!
Uh oh. It would be considered unequal is anyone moved ahead of anyone else.
Frankly, I’m glad of this. The employees reaping these bennies all seem pretty liberal from my exposure to them. Now, their lib associates are turning on them. I hope they enjoy sleeping in the bed they’ve made.
Honestly, can you imagine going down to the airport and "protesting," with signs, etc., the corporate jet corner, complaining of the inequities of life?
Would the press hear the shouts?
And do these, so-called, "tech workers," as they ride their buses, feel particularly privileged in having to ride these buses?
We are talking about buses, right? You dress it up, etc., and it is, after all, still a "blue water special."
I heard a politician saying “it’s not how smart you are, it’s not how hard you work, it’s being given the opportunity”.
Who actually believes a dumb, lazy person is going to take advantage of an opportunity?
Before the 2008 crash I worked part-time at a window & door factory 2 days a week pushing a broom & cleaning caulk from product before shipping. This job was to get me out of the house a couple days a week after coming back from Iraq.....
Anyway....somebody in upper management read my resume’ and offered me a full time salaried position w/ Engineering at several times the pay. A certain individual of Hispanic descent who had worked the production line for 9-10 yrs. got in my face about my instant promotion being “unfair”.
I allowed him to rant then asked him a simple two part question - “What university did you graduate from and what technical skills (design) to do you have to offer?”
His subsequent silence and blank stare said it all.
I’m betting the majority of them consider themselves “good liberals”.
Of course, they just want to feel good about themselves for caring for the plight of others, as long as there is no personal sacrifice involved.
I didn’t spend six years in Evil Medical School to be called “mister,” thank you very much.
They are super nice buses...
And the main thing is - they’re better than what everyone else “has” to ride in. Even if they were only microscopically better, the envy that the left has bred in people would surface as anger and outrage.
What most people don’t think about is that five on that buss will rise up and start a business and employ as many people five fold.
If the high tech workers in the Bay Area are not conservatives, they they deserve this. Or else they they should give up the perqs and continue working their collective asses off.
Since 90% of those techies voted for Obozo, they should be happy to redistribute more of their own wealth. If you vote for a Marxist, what does that make you?
Pray America is Waking
The poor get free transportation and free food and they don’t have to work for it.
San Francisco may stave off a collapse only due to its location. Good weather and coastal access. Otherwise its downfall would dwarf Detroit’s
There are many pushing for a global minimum wage. Even some that have worked for IMF have pushed this idea.
In neighboring Richmond, Chevron is the biggest employer and the biggest donor to schools, etc. What thanks do they get? Attempts to tax, fine and protest it out of existence.
Chevron is the biggest employer and the biggest donor to schools, etc.
How many **private** vouchers could those donations support?
Could those donations to the SS schools ( single-payer, socialist-entitlement government indoctrination centers) support the opening of **private** schools?
I am reminded of Atlas Shrugged where businesses thought they could buy off government control through donations and lobbying.
Many years ago when I was going to night school in computer repair, I also tried my hand at a C class, the results were pretty awful.
I maxed the little repair program though and do pretty well in the hardware side after a few years of struggle and suffering. A lot better than what public TV land would have ever paid me.
Funny thing about life there. A couple of times a slot came open for the entry level support job. I applied both times. By then I had my little A+ and some Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 certs plus a lot of experience from being around there at all hours helping others figure out late night problems. A couple of the MIS folks showed me stuff and were glad that I would help at night.
The supervisor was a CPA (paper MCSE if you ask me) told me very friendly but firmly that I had no hope of a job or even an interview even though I worked there. The most I got was a quick meeting telling me as much. Before that he called me up and said after a minute or so of empty platitudes that “this won’t take long”.
I complained to HR which was a waste a few times. That just made me more determined.
If it weren’t for these “over paid”, highly skilled techies...none of these lowlife, low-info voters would be carrying a smartphone, or going home to watch msnbc on their widescreens....
I have two solutions for this problem:
1. The resentful could obtain 19 years of education like those who are riding those buses and join the successful tech crowd.
2. The high tech industries could all simply move out of the valley to some place like Texas and take their buses with them, and then there would no longer be any symbols of inequality for the rest to rail against. This is a particularly good solution because those riding the buses would no longer have rocks thrown at them, and the rock throwers could go back to feeling good about themselves because everyone left in the valley would be equal. It’s one of those classic win-win situations.
So who’s making more dough?
The union bus driver or the riders?
That the thing..they do want the papers to get the money or opportunity..but your have to have to have the skill to bypass the papers..it a balancing act really dual tract and get both.. In other words working it this way ..don’t dis the paper MCSE..it 50% of what you need the other 50% is the skill..you have to have BOTH ...so if you need to do pass 4 sure thing do it...thing is I know 20 years CCIE that work for Cisco that do it to reup there certs..it not either /or, skill or paper..its both, its the left and right leg ..one leg only and you limp thought
I hate commiefornia more every day.
Lefties targeting de-facto NSA employees?
I call that a twoofer and I advise throwing bags of urine.
Then hopefully both sides get thrown in jail.
Are these crybabies the ones screaming for a living wage too?
Well, one of my daughters is one of those high tech workers. However, she is conservative and not a liberal whiner. Her company provides a shuttle to pick up workers. That same company gives away many thousands in donations to the local community (often overlooked by the lib whiners), and the workers spend many thousands in the local community. Rents are high, going for an average of $3500/month but that reflects the influx of high-paid jobs, and along with it all the remodeling improvements going on citywide.
Incidentally, my daughter worked her ass off graduating from a local university by the time she was 21 and is a productive worker. Unlike the ones protesting, who are most likely getting handouts and are unwilling to work.
These crybabies want everyone to ride public transit, which would cause increased fares and shortages. Then they’ll want increased wages to pay the increased fares. See, it all makes sense!
“Well, one of my daughters is one of those high tech workers.”
Is the problem all in management? How does she explain this to her coworkers? What’s her view of her coworkers? Doesn’t sound like a very good ROI for all those donations/support to the “local community.” Maybe the stockholders should step in.
At the very least, this is an excellent educational opportunity for all those employees like your daughter. (Essentially, they’re getting mugged).
Thanks for the insight. I hope all the employees have read Atlas Shrugged.
Despite the stereotype of the San Francisco region being composed of all liberal nut cases, there are quite a few "normal" folks. These tech companies do good things for the community. My daughter's company annually donates thousands to local schools and the community, and there has been a marked increase in the beautification of the local business strip. Workers are given scrip to spend at local stores, do so daily, and the stores benefit.
The lib protesters do so because they may be getting displaced by high rents, but that process has gone on for decades. There were few complaints a few decades ago when new hotels and skyscrapers displaced skid row downtown (south of Market Street from 2nd to 5th), or when the same happened when the new ballpark and condos displaced the poor not too long ago. Their protests are misplaced, taking it out on the new workers who are just trying to do their job and get there. The protesters are sinking to a new low, rather than try to better themselves. My wife and I, along with our children, are native San Franciscans. Most, if not all, the protesters, are from elsewhere trying to get a free ride from hard working peoples. I see it all the time, when I ask them where are they from and they are not born here.
