It was a heck of a way for President Obama to wrap up 2013. In asking the question at the presidents year-end news conference, Julie Pace of the Associated Press captured several things at once: the reality of a genuinely disappointing year for Obama, a mood of skepticism in the media about him, the inevitability of Beltway scorekeeping and the personalization of nearly everything in politics. Obama, for good reason, avoided a direct answer. But Id suggest that 2013 was not his worst year. That distinction should be reserved for 2011, when the president emerged from the summer looking weak after protracted negotiations with House Republicans over a debt-ceiling increase.
Obama was operating from a position of fear. Faced with a GOP buoyed by its 2010 election victories and still intoxicated by insurrectionary tea party spirits, he believed Republicans might well be willing to pull the nations financial house down by refusing to raise the debt limit. This forced him to accept the long-term budget cuts in the sequester that to this day severely constrain his ability to innovate in policy and largely lock in place a fiscal policy that holds back the economic recovery.
The year 2013 was better than that. Its true that the health-care Web site fiasco threatened to engulf Obamas signature achievement. And Obamacare will undergo new tests in the coming year. The sites back end problems in connecting with insurance companies could create more bad news in January as some who thought they had bought policies discover that their purchases failed to go through.
But the Web sites troubles were fixable, and its remarkable that the repair has gone as quickly as it has.

Where I come from, this article would be the same as making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
EVERY year that Obama is not Impeached is a good year for Obama.
“the reality of a genuinely disappointing year for Obama,”
The media’s perspective in a nutshell.
Nothing about the American people who are now living trying to live with this idiot’s lies and criminality.
I feel so sorry Barry had a bad year.
Even if he’s impeached, he would still sit as President. Prison is too good for this man. Even if he was incarcerated for the rest of his life, he would be a drain on the taxpayers.
bull... 2013 was worse...
Obama, for good reason, avoided a direct answer.”
...when HAS he answered a direct question?! Other then...”how did you get so handsome”? “How did get so smart”? “How do you feel about golf”?
There is one way for this country to feel better. Smoke what EJ is smoking.
Bill Paxton! He was great in Apollo 13, too. I so wanted him to reference Aliens something along the lines of: “15 minutes to power up the LEM? Man, this game is just about over!”
Obama is having the time of his sorry life.
* Obama violates the US Constitution on a weekly basis.
* Obama legislates any law that he wants changed, and thus bypasses the US Congress.
* Speaker John “Benghazi Coverup” Boehner refuses to appoint a Special Prosecutor for any of the Obama Scandals.
* Obama KNOWS that he will never be held accountable for anything in his 8 year reign.
An Impeachment would be a shock to US President Valerie Jarrett, and First Bitch Michelle Obama.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Barry Soetoro would stay in the De Nile River on his Corporate Jet, Air Force One.
Actually, 2013 is gonna seem like a picnic to obama and the Democrats compared to mid-2014, when it has become evident to everyone that obamacare has completely imploded, killing people and destroying the U.S. medical system in the process. (Actually, it should be evident now, with a net loss of 5 million insured since about a million (almost all medicaid) have signed up versus 6 million who had their insurance cancelled by obamacare.)
T heard noises that sounded like loud slurping and then I saw that ej wrote it.
Has this been the worst year of your presidency? ...implying that they have all been bad, but this one is the worst. I will add, it continues to be a true challenge to our great country, and the constitution.
Which one of the Dionne quints wrote this?
