Shots were fired at the German ambassador's residence in Athens early on Monday, without causing injury.
Bullets were found embedded in the steel gate, Greece's Kathimerini news website reports.
Ambassador Wolfgang Dold's residence is in the Greek capital's Halandri district. The raid took place at around 03:30 local time (01:30 GMT).
It is not clear who the attackers were. Germany's insistence on budget cuts has caused much resentment in Greece.
At least 60 spent bullet casings were found at the scene of the attack. Police say the bullets came from two Kalashnikov assault rifles.
So far no-one has admitted carrying out the attack.
In a message to the unidentified perpetrators, Mr Dold said "whoever is responsible for this act: you will not succeed in disrupting the close and friendly relations of our two countries".
He was in the residence when the shots were fired.

Actually it’s a little tougher than just wanting more Gleek gummint money. The Germans, being the biggest lenders to the Greek/ Euro loan fund, have also led the way in demanding the Greek gummint trim its spending back to something sustainable. Before the recent tightening Greek debt was over 200% of GDP. The good news is that the Gleeks are too broke to start a fight so they won’t be a factor in the next Mediteranean war.

The Krauts are highly conflicted, here. They are lending money to the Greeks to buy consumer goods from Germany, so the Krauts are going to suffer reduced sales if the Greeks stop their spending, as requested. Sound familiar re China and the US?
There is indeed some confliction going on. The Greeks don’t have a lot to export, mostly produce, since they seem to manufacture mostly tourist pottery otherwise. The last time I looked the trade imbalance was about 7 to 1 in favor of the Krauts. Even they can eat just so much cabbage. But the good news from the Kraut side is that the Greek economy just ain’t that big-—the entire 12 million people produce less than the City of Chicago. The Athenians lost their edge on ship building quite some time ago and are clearly on their way back to the 19th century unless they suck it up and deal with rampant corruption.
Nah. It’s those Greek Amish again. Such playful boys, with toys. Best known for saying to tourists, “Get thee to the Parthenon”.
They really should get rid of those vests during the summer’s heat.

1914...the perfect storm.
If Roosevelt had won the 1908 election, and gotten re-elected in 1912 again...a totally different scenario on the outcome.
If the crown prince had taken the warning after the first assassination attempt of the day, and had ample guards around him.
If the Czar had realized the manipulation of the situation by the Serbs, and defused the mess by refusing to enter into the foray.
If the local government in Sarajevo had simply told the crown prince of a possible attempt to kill him.
There are a thousand ‘if’s’ that came up almost one hundred years ago. We have a fairly dismal understanding of life in 1914, the politics involved, or the shape of American life at the time. History professors have done a crappy job in viewing and telling the story over the past fifty-odd years. We know more about the US Civil War, than anything from the 1914-1919 era.
Obviously a citizen uprising over a video depicting Greeks engaging in what they've been known for..........(no, not drinking Ouzo or yelling OOPAH! when they set the cheese on fire)
