Officers’ rank badges were often required to be painted or affixed to the fronts of helmets in the European Theatre of Operations, especially in Gen. Patton’s command. It was also common in various commands in the ETO for the back of helmets to be marked with a vertical white stripe for a commissioned officer and a horizontal white stripe for a non-commissioned officer. Some units in the ETO also placed their distinctive insignia on the sides of their helmets, but this was rare in combat zones.

Bet he was glad to see you and Mrs MacNessa.

Around two years ago, the Daughter of one of the 208ths veterans began a project of contacting as many of the veterans still alive and their children.
After we all sort of got together by email, she suggested we send our WWII pictures to her and she would try to organize them. We sent them on CDs so the quality could be retained. There were only a handful of the veterans still alive but their childre fortunately still had their pictures.
This lady then made an attmpt to identify them all, sometimes with the name of the person who took it but often just saying Holland 1944 or Germany 1945. There were even quite a few from the Normandy landing but most were a day or two after the worst of it. Actually the 208th were first assigned to land on D-Day but their ship’s engine broke down and they did not arrive until the beach had been secured. Very lucky for them as combat Engineers on D-Dad suffered 80% casualties, the highest of any.
Now I have more than a thousand pictures from the 208th but unless some info is given with the picture I just have to guess. There really are some good ones tho and I will try to give credit when I can.

Mrs. MacNessa went to the hospital to get him. My part was all done on the phone while at the office. I did not expect him to be released today, but there were simply no beds available at any mental health facility in the state. A sad commentary. He would have gone to Shepherd-Pratt or Hopkins willingly.

This picture is not mine. It is for fair use with no ownership claimed but I am using it because it is such better quality than mine. Mine was taken from an angle to the right of the officers and far enough to the side that Field Marshall Montgomery is almost hidden by Churchill. It was also taken a few seconds after this one and is not as high quality. I came across this one trying to learn the name of the big galoot to the right of Churchill. It turns out he is Field Marshall Brooks. Next is Churchill, then Field Marshall Montgomery who is almost hidden by Churchill in my pic. The last one is Lt. General Simpson.

This is the 208th's picture of the same scene. Clearly not as good as the official U.S, Army one. they are crossing the Roer on a "Bailey Bridge". In the signal corps history of the 208th them mention that they took a week and worked with British Engineers learning how to build Bailey Bridges.

My grandfather was stationed at Fort Campbell in the early 1950's (my mom was born there) when it was still an armor post.
If you get a chance to visit Fort Campbell, make sure to stop by the Pratt Museum, it has some wonderful displays on the post's history as well as the history of the 11th, 13th, and 101st Airborne Divisions. There are plans for constructing a larger museum that will be located on the edge of post, so that visitors can access it without having to register at the post visitor center.
In addition, the Fort Donelson National Battlefield is only 25 miles away. It is located at the southern end of Land Between the Lakes, which is another excellent site to visit if you are in the area.

Prayers continue for peace and results for all of you.
Is he on a list for a bed?
