New Year festivities banned in Saudi Arabia

Saudi religious police warn against celebrating New Year’s Eve Monday, 30 December 2013 10:50 AM

Saudi Arabia’s religious police has warned that “punitive measures” will be taken against those who celebrated New Year’s Eve on December 31, Arabic daily Okaz reported. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vices (Haia) based its warning on a religious edict issued by the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars banning such celebrations, the newspaper said. The conservative Islamic kingdom follows the Muslim lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, which stems from the Christian religion. Its new year is based on the moon and most recently started on November 3.

Haia officials are known to deliberately search for people buying items used to celebrate Christian holidays and confiscate them. Similar warnings have been issued by Islamic groups in other countries, including in Malaysia where Malaysia International Institute of Islamic Cooperation (Ikiam) said New Year’s Eve reflected the Jewish culture and would cause Muslim youths to commit sins. “The celebrations will have excessive entertainment, which can cause the majority of Muslim youth to let their guard down and commit a lot of sin,” Ikiam leader Datuk Mustapha Idrus said.

I’m in Indonesia. We’re celebrating the New Year. Lots and lots of fireworks all over the place.

Selamat Natal dan Tahun Baru 2014.

What’s the deal with Islam in Indonesia? Do they have their own brand, or are people indifferent to it? Has Al Qaida made any inroads?

They do have their own brand. They also have some fundies. And, yes, Al Qaida is here and reportedly has some training camps.

There are also lots of Christians here.

The rain has started in earnest. Fireworks might be over for a bit.

Yes, I cry, “how long, O Lord, until these be avenged?” My heart breaks and I dig down deeper, check my committments and continue my work.

And, I praise God that my kids have grown up and are “safe”.

The year is 632 AD, and will remain so for all eternity. Any claims to the contrary are heresy, punishable by death.

I remember reading they don't celebrate "Happy" occasions....Happy Birthday, Happy New Year, Happy Christmas, Happy Easter...

And that's why the Obama's don't celebrate the kid's birthday...or OUR holidays...He's a born and raised Muzzie.

And since there is no forgiveness for sins, better just to cut their iniquitous throats and send them to Hell. Thanks Altenkrug.

Saudi Arabia is still using a 1200A.D. calendar. Why change now?

Because Islam uses a lunar calendar that only has 354 days in it, and Moslems have done nothing over the centuries to make it accurate, it is now 44 years off. Nice going, Mohammed!
