Nixon’s “crime” was to attempt to duck behind “plausible deniability”, then mistakenly, later, to come out and “take full responsibility”. This made him LOOK like he was lying, and worse, covering up for underlings over whom he had only limited control (no chance to call them in and publicly fire them).
A young legal aide, one Hillary Rodham, was part of the cabal intent on criminalizing Nixon’s actions as President. Working with the Watergate committee, under Jerry Zeifman, Mr Zeifman later characterized the work that the young Ms. Rodham did as “she was a liar. She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.”
The roots behind the present crisis in leadership of the territory once known as “the United States of America” go far deeper than most people imagine.
