Lapid: Israel's demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as Jewish state is rubbish
Jerusalem Post ^ | 1/1/14

An op-ed published in the New York Times on Tuesday by Roger Cohen, titled "My Jewish State" has shed light on comments Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid made during a sit down with the columnist in August 2013. During their chat last summer, Lapid reiterated his lack of interest in Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.

Lapid reportedly told Cohen “the fact that we demand from Palestinians a declaration that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state, I just think this is rubbish. I don’t need that. The whole point of Israel was we came here saying we don’t need anyone else to recognize us anymore because we can recognize ourselves. We are liberated.”

Last year, Lapid made a similar statement, during an interview the Charlie Rose show in New York.

"I don't feel we we need a declaration from the Palestinians that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state,” Lapid said. “My father [former Justice Minister Yosef Lapid] didn’t come to Haifa from the Budapest ghetto to get recognition from [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas. The whole concept of the State of Israel is that we recognize ourselves. After 2,000 years of being dependent on other people, we are independent and make our own rules now.”

Then we don't need to negotiate with the Palestinians for peace, either. We can simply declare ourselves at peace, and if they don't like it, they can lump it.

If Israel’s Muslim enemies ever announce that they recognize her, they will be lying.

Gawd is lapid really that stupid Seems very hard to believe that?! or is she just afflicted with the old Jewish suicide disease. Or both? Can’t Bibi send her to water tomatoes in Beersheba or something constructive like that ? She’s a disaster in Jerusalem ( government ).

Generally statements like this can form a truth table...

For palees to state they dont recognize Israel means they dont. No need to go further analyzing its truthfulness or not.

For palees to state they do leads to the question of veracity or not.

They only state the latter to tip the balance towards annilation.

Sorry I was thinking of livni. But same question applies. Alas. The Jewish suicide disease virus is obviously quite contagious

Israel is not a sovereign state in the sense that France, for example, is a sovereign state

It would be beyond belief for America’s Secretary of State to visit France and demand that the French president sit down with the chancellor of Germany to negotiate which parts of France he will agree to give up to Germany. Of course, the French president would never agree to such negotiations. If Germany threatened war in consequence, France would retaliate.

If Israel were like France it also would not agree to discuss giving up any of its territory, and would be prepared to defend itself if attacked. But instead the Israelis are ALWAYS ready to talk about giving up parts of their land.

Until a prime minister of Israel arises who has the courage to declare to our Secretary of State that Israel will no longer participate in the farcical land-for-peace process and that it will defend itself if attacked, Israel will not be a sovereign state but will remain an international problem child attached to America’s apron strings.

Unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu does not seem to be the prime minister who whose courage will give Israel the sovereignty it needs.

Recognition by other nations of Israel as a Jewish state is as worthless as the breath needed to say it. One need not not be defined by others. Israel should be what Israelis say it is.

Peaceful coexistence with her neighbors should be the goal.

Neighbors who refuse peaceful coexistence should be taught a harsh lesson or destroyed.

I would love to hear Netanyahu tell John Kerry to GTF out of his country and stay out.

Lapid is the male idiot. You must be thinking of Tzipi. Together they are the ditzinamic duo.

But that’s not how Lapid means it. He means, we should give the Palestinians land and call it peace even if they do not recognize the existence of Israel as a Jewish State. The truth is, we don’t need anyone to recognize us, and one square centimeter surrendered for the sake of being recognized is one square centimeter too many. It is rubbish. So are these negotiations.

But we are. We are a teeny tiny sovereign state that has a gigantic, humongo superpower state as our “best buddy”. The “best buddy” is trying to get us to eat a bug and kiss our own ass in public. Therefore, we need to get away from him.
