Posted on 01/01/2014 6:45:46 PM PST by jimbo123
Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio has signaled he may embrace a series of limited changes to the nations immigration laws in the coming months, giving advocates for change new hope that 2014 might be the year that a bitterly divided Congress reaches a political compromise to overhaul the sprawling system.
Mr. Boehner has in recent weeks hired Rebecca Tallent, a longtime immigration adviser to Senator John McCain, the Arizona Republican who has long backed broad immigration changes. Advocates for an overhaul say the hiring, as well as angry comments by Mr. Boehner critical of Tea Party opposition to the recent budget deal in Congress, indicates that he is serious about revamping the immigration system despite deep reservations from conservative Republicans.
Aides to Mr. Boehner said this week that he was committed to what he calls step by step moves to revise immigration laws, which they have declined to specify.

Consider the source.
Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio has signaled he may...
...get down on his knees and act like a Vichy Republican. What a change of pace, eh?
You mean Juan “Statist’s Bitch” Boner? Shocking!
He’ll do as he’s told.
So why did Boehner hire the woman who co-wrote the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bills to be his new Amnesty Czar?
I don’t know why. Send him a letter and ask him that.
Overhaul, change, reform, all mean amnesty. Nothing else and nothing less.
I support immigration reform in 2014 - it is a must - and this what I support:
#1 is seal both north and south borders.
#2 remove all Obama restrictions on the Border Patrol and allow them to do their jobs.
#3. All Immigration judges are to order immediate deportation of all illegal aliens charged with crimes - all crimes.
#4. Pass legislation forbidding illegal aliens from accessing any and all welfare benefits derived from federal funds. (ditto - education)
#5. strictly enforce the law prohibiting employers from hiring illegal aliens.
#6. Pass stringent laws denying citizenship to children born of two non-citizens (legal or illegal) The Constitution does so state this but has been misinterpreted over the years per some (many?)constitutional scholars.
With the above in place self-deportation will take place. This is real immigration reform
This I support and no more!
I think the GOP will get tough on illegal immigration, and put them all on double-secret probation.
Careful playing with that fire John.
The strategy is for the GOPe to fracture the party even more ahead of the 2014 mid terms. In this way, any negative effect from Obamacare to the Democrats will be largely muted. This in turn will assure the GOPe’s minority status for years to come thus achieving the party’s long term strategy of “managed decline”.
Looks like Boner has already made amnesty a done deal.
The MSM and libs keep saying that this is Obama’s best bet to a legislative accomplishment, this is just another example of that.
I heard one on Sunday shows saying between the election and primary is their best bet, and Paul Ryan would sell it with his conservative creds.
They got one uphill path.
“Step by step changes” means it goes to the Senate where their version is written into it and then goes to Senate-House conference committee and then to the House for a vote.
A vote in the House means ALL democrats will vote for it leaving the need for only 17 ‘squish’ republicans to vote for it, and Amnesty for 11 million + lawbreakers becomes the critical step for it to be law of the land.
Immigration law needs reform but NOT with this Senate and NOT under this President.
It is so easy for you guys to come on this board and complain and spill out your sour grapes over this outrage. Why not call up your congressmen and other peoples congressmen and complain and give your sour grapes to them instead?
Neither Senator Elizabeth Warren nor Senator Ed Markey are willing to take my calls.
That's the question EVERYONE should be asking of their Congressperson.
Why did Boehner hire Rebecca Tallent (McShame/Kennedy Amnesty Czar) as a consultant? You have to ask your Reps, since Bonehead's office doesn't typically take calls.
Yeah, I'd back some changes in immigration, like make it harder for unskilled, non-English speaking drones.
You should be a professional, have a good command of the language, and meet all of the stringent requirements before being even considered for citizenship.
Oh, the fake Indian.
They aren't all practicing Catholic social conservatives waiting to vote GOP??
GOP 'Strategist' Ana Navarro says amnesty will get the GOP the Hispanic vote. But she says we cant use the words 'illegal' or 'amnesty', Hispanics don't like those words .
The borders need not be ‘sealed.’ Having them controlled and crossings limited to legally authorized persons would work just fine.
The rest sound good except #3. Do you really want to get the word out that committing any crime you want to in the US will merely get you a trip home instead of any prison sentence?
Interior enforcement and visa tracking to prevent the millions of visa overstayers would be helpful also.
Right now nothing much is going on.
Congress isn't even in session.
This NYT article tells us nothing,
Boehner, Ryan and Cantor’s staffers have been in town during the break and are working on Omnibus spending bill as well as the amnesty bills.
Didn't they just pass a two year budget and a military funding bill?
What's left is a Farm bill, and unemployment extension if Dems have their way.
I been reading here about that imminent house amnesty bill here since ~ last June, when the Senate passed their’s.
Issa’s staffers were also in town during the break working on his amnesty bill, too.

$1T spending bill nears unveiling
Congress is set to unveil a giant spending bill next week that staff for appropriators have been preparing on a near daily basis throughout the holiday break.
Aides say progress on the $1 trillion, 12-part omnibus legislation has been better than expected at the subcommittee level, and that their goal remains to pass the bill through both chambers by Jan. 16 to prevent a government shutdown.
The secretive process has members anticipating rushed votes when they return next week, as congressional leaders race the clock.
Its unclear whether top leaders of the House and Senate spending panels will return to Washington to negotiate final details of the deal before Monday. Aides say that decision depends on how much progress staff can make.
First it was was going to be amnesty in summer, then in fall, then in winter(before end of year) , then maybe after the primaries, another once says it will be in lame duck.
What's to work on?
Amnesty rush starts after Omnibus bill is passed.
Cantor Dream act bill.
Issa H1B and agriculture guest worker bill.
Then what was that bill that both House and Senate passed that sent Levin, Rush and Heritage fund into a tizzy?
Boehner needs to be gotten rid of NOW.
There is still a Farm bill hanging, unless that is included in above, and Dems plan on beating Republicans up on unemployment comp extensions.
For the last 40 years, the Party of Government (both ‘Rat wing and RINO wing) has done all it can to replace Ameircan voters with Mexicans.
Now they see their goal within grasp.
About that upcoming spending bill, that has been kept completely below the radar screen.
I haven’t heard about that on FNC, MSNBC, CNN, the TV networks, or even what is left of AM talk radio over the holidays(guest hosts) .
Everyone seems to assume that is what the Ryan Murray budget votes were, and its over,
Probably because they don't know what they mean. Not many illegals looking for amnesty even speak English.
Whatever we do, we will be making a GRAVE MISTAKE to give illegal immigrants a status that eventually leads to having the right to vote.
Don't need to.
The Voting Rights Act reauthorized by GOP congress and POTUS in 2006 requires that voting places be able to supply ballots in Spanish.,
This is real immigration reform
Good listing of a step-by-step immigration policy reformation that I would support.
Until the GOP controls both the Senate and House, such bills will be unlikely, as Reid will just stuff them in the file boxes instead of bringing them up for a vote. ....Even if allowed a Senate vote that passed, the bills would not be signed by the Pretender in the WH.
and Paul Ryan would sell it with his conservative creds.
Ryan has shown that he lacks conservative creds. The GOP-e might like him, but Conservatives don’t... IMO.
How about the famous ‘The Ryan Plan’ ?
It balanced the budget in 10 years while cutting taxes too, and no one's medicare was cut while he saved it.
I still remember how most Freepers acted like they found true love when he pitched that in 2011.
well isn’t his white trash daughter married to some Jamaican immigrant?
The crisis of Obamacare, unemployment, and the economy is enough to deal with this year. Adding something as major as immigration , when the country is spiraling out of control, is insane. Besides, the Senate is ignoring everything the House has passed.
DON’T PASS ANYTHING UNTIL THE SENATE DOES ITS JOB....
HOLD OFF UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTIONS.....WE ARE ABOUT TO WIN BOTH HOUSES!
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, JOHN BOEHNER?
Yes it does, with millions of new rat voters. I wonder if we are a permanent minority?
“Why do you assume that I’m not doing that too?”
On an MSNBC Daytime show today ‘Now with...’ they had a guest on who they identified as an ex-GOP house member from Arizona who assured the libs on the show that Bohner was planning a big immigration legislative push that included path to citizenship for more than those who grew up here.
He said there are five House immigration bills, didnt say what they were,
Some of them were skeptical that Bohner could get anything passed, but he said he was confident.
That sounds consistent with what you were telling me on this thread,
