There is currently a power struggle in progress between the Turkish leader and a rival Islamist organization. Both groups have adherents in the government. This is behind the wave of corruption arrests and the firing of the officials who conducted the arrests. It’s a chess game played out with living pieces, some of which are more powerful than others.

Throwing Erdogan out of power would probably be a good thing, but the alternative would most likely be somebody just like him.

That was rhetorical, right?

Take a country that was trying to be a democracy by among other things, suppressing Islam (Ataturk), then make it a pawn between the Soviet Union and the U.S., causing multiple coups, then unleash Islam again, then pretend it is a democracy and move it toward full EU membership, then make it a staging area for CIA and militant Islamic covert operations, then make it a pawn between Iran and the U.S., then criticize it when it turns out to be a corrupt theocratic dictatorship rather than a democracy.

Is that about right?

Turkey has become a repository for the social and political dysfunctions of the rest of the world. They can't seem to catch a break.

One truck could be carrying weapons? I wonder what was carried by all those trucks that came from Iraq before the war began?
