U.S. regulators said on Thursday they were permanently relaxing school meal rules that were designed to combat childhood obesity by reining in calories and portion sizes but aroused complaints the policies caused students to go hungry.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture had initially loosened the rules in late 2012, suspending daily and weekly maximum amounts for grains and meat or meal alternatives. That allowed school districts to service larger portions without penalty.
"Earlier this school year, USDA made a commitment to school nutrition professionals that we would make the meat and grain flexibility permanent and provide needed stability for long-term planning. We have delivered on that promise," Kevin Concannon, USDA undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services, said in a statement.
The announcement was welcomed by North Dakota Republican Senator John Hoeven, who had introduced a bill with Arkansas Democratic Senator Mark Pryor to make the changes permanent.

Have they noticed that Michelle “wide load” Obama holds no government offices??
My school lunch back in the late 60’s early 70’s cost about $0.35. A vegetable, fruit, meat and desert composed the meal. Milk was $0.02. Granted there were subsidies, but at least we had sane people in control.
Bring back the fat lunch ladies with the hair nets and all the rest of sanity!
Or . . . you could homeschool.
“policies caused students to go hungry.”
And food to go wasted on people who don’t want it. Lots of veg and fruits tossed out (hint, libs - they don’t keep).
permanently? yeah right
Oh, lordy, lordy! Thank you, benevolent overlords! How pathetic we’ve become.
Good news, citizens! Our chocolate ration has been increased to 25 grams a week from 30! Praise Dear Leader!
Let the kids be kids, ***holes!
And she failed.
Same idiots want to dole out health care services under ObamaCare.
No. The rules were implemented to pacify a private citizen, Michelle Obama, by starving school children because the harpy can't control her own weight.
No level of government has legal authority to dictate what your children eat. They all are operating under the color of law which We The People have allowed them to get away with.
One of the toughest parts of my high school and college education was learning how to force down wretched swill that was billed as “food.” Yes, it did help build character and determination, but it was awful stuff.
What a farce!
wish they would permanently get rid of Ocare
The federal Gov't should NEVER be in charge of dictating to 50 states what food they serve.
I think Michelle saw this coming. The only time over the last several months she engaged in advocating a program was when she was pushing Americans to drink more WATER... the food message is kaput.
I think Michelle has arrived at her “Let Them Eat Cake” moment.
Why stop there?
Would someone, in the name of all that is holy, please put a STOP to the meddling that our recent First Ladies have been engaging in?
I am up for much more
obastardcare is getting worse and worse. I wonder how the regime is going to react to the latest messes? I hope I am right in feeling a revolt in the air but I also feel an economic fall. People are going to become scared when they finally figure out how much this mess is going to cost them. They will tighten up when they feel access to health care for their family is threatened.
Examples like this are going to be stupid easy to find EVERY day. Bank on it.
