GOP Infighting: A Boon for Senate Conservatives Fund

The civil war that engulfed the GOP this past fall proved a financial windfall for one group fanning conservative discontent with Republican leaders, as well as the candidates that group supports.

The Senate Conservatives Fund announced Friday that in the last three months of 2013 the group spent and its members donated a combined $2 million on behalf of the five Republican primary candidates it backs, including three who are challenging sitting U.S. senators.

The top recipient was Kentucky businessman Matt Bevin, who is running to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.). The Senate Conservatives Fund spent $535,611 on Mr. Bevin’s behalf, while its donors contributed $430,383 to his campaign, according to numbers released by the group.

The financial support for Mr. Bevin included a six-figure advertising blitz against Mr. McConnell criticizing the Republican leader for brokering a deal with Senate Democrats to reopen the federal government after a stalemate over funding the new health law resulted in a partial shutdown in October.

Other beneficiaries of the fund’s largesse included: Chris McDaniel, the Republican trying to oust Republican Sen. Thad Cochran in Mississippi; Milton Wolf, who is running against Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts; and candidates trying to win primaries in Louisiana and Nebraska.

The year of Republican infighting is proving lucrative for the Senate Conservatives Fund. By the end of November, the group had raised more than $6.8 million and spent more than $7.3 million, according to Federal Election Commission data. In the two years leading up to the 2012 election, the group raised $7.7 million and spent $3.5 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

“The Republican establishment in Washington may spend hundreds of millions against conservative candidates this year, but the grassroots aren’t going down without a fight,” said Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund.

If you get a call from the RNC or the NRSC, tell them "Sorry, I donated to the Senate Conservatives Fund" (even if you haven't). It's worth it to get that word going up the chain that the days of their aristocratic influence in choosing the candidates for the people are numbered!

Already done. I almost cuss at RNC callers, and I NEVER cuss.

Every dollar to a GOP umbrella organization is a dollar for a RINO to use against the TEA party.

The GOPe doesn't consider Democrats to be the enemy.

I just received a fundraising letter from the Senate Conservatives Fund. I will donate (again) through return mail. As part of this fundraising letter they included a sheet of “donor protection stickers” that say “Sorry! I make my candidate contributions through the Senate Conservatives Fund”. The stickers can be used to affix to return mail in response to other fundraising mail you receive. I thought that these stickers were hilarious.

I will NOT contribute a single penny to the RNC or the NRSC. In addition to contributions to the SCF, I also donate to individual CONSERVATIVE candidates when I can afford to do so.

Most of the RNC callers are paid functionaries, probably Democrats making minimum wage. They don’t even know the names of challenges of GOP senator. They probably don’t even know the names of the GOP senators either.

I cannot imagine people in KY throwing out McC, but they let McC throw out Bunning. I guess Bunning votes for Bevin.

Let me repeat what I said on an earlier thread.

The Conservatives are facing the establishment candidates in Primaries. Primary voters are: #1 More informed..... #2 More Conservative... and #3 More radically involved in the election process. All of these favor our team.
