Man Shot in Roselle Was Picked at Random
New Jersey Newsroom ^ | January 3, 2014 | Bob Holt

An incident in Roselle last weekend, unfortunately, sounds a little too close to that “Knockout” game. A Roselle man who was shot twice was apparently selected at random by his assailant, according to local police.

The 20-year old Roselle resident was leaving a party last Saturday night when the shooting occurred.

NJ.com reported that Roselle Police Captain James Loprete said the assailant approached the victim from behind, firing five shots from a .45 caliber handgun, hitting the victim twice in his back.

Loprete said the attack seemed to come at random, according to NJ.com.

An Associated Press story in The Asbury Park Press said the shooter was a 17-year old boy from Linden. He was apprehended on New Year’s Day, and is being held in Union County’s juvenile detention center.

According to NJ.com, the shooting victim was treated and released at University Hospital in Newark. Loprete said the man still has a bullet left in his chest that is expected to be removed later.

The teenager has been charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses.

This is getting to be a little more serious.
Do I need to ask the race of the two parties involved?
Probably not...

Two rounds in the back with a .45 cal and the guy is treated and released??? What is the guy made of steel? Of course the 17 year old will be treated and released only to shoot someone else.

If I had my way, attempted murder would care the exact same sentence as murder.

A “Youth”.

We have to STOP this bull$*** about treating these murders with kid gloves because of age. The nature of the crime should be the only qualifying characteristic and this little SOB should be in a prison with hard timers FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE (New Jersey doesn’t exterminate murdering mutants.)

Twenty years ago, or so, a young thug in my town decided that to cement his place in the hood, he would commit the first murder of the year. So he walked the streets until he found a guy leaving a New Years party, walked up behind him and let fly. Killed the man in cold blood, and walked home. The next day he had to tell some of his crew and oh yeah, his girlfriend. She, to her credit, turned him in and the yoot, now no longer a yoot, is still in the big house.

When I saw this story a few days ago, I was wondering if it was the same sort of thing. It seems it was...

What's pathetic is that this sort of thing probably wouldn't happen very often even if Saddam Hussein was in office here in the U.S. :-P

Well that’s good news, the shooting wasn’t a vendetta or gangland shooting .... makes one feel much safer walking the streets in NJ.

With the death wish for the victim, fulfilled on the perp.

I couldn't find the photo of the perp.

Is he black, or is he not?

The teenager has been charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses.

He'll never be prosecuted for, still less convicted of a firearms offense, and will be back on the streets in five years or less.

One thing for dang sure, the victim is not black and the perp is not white. That bit of info would have been reported.

My initial thought too - living through 2 .45s in the upper body is a trick. Probably bull-nose vs. hollow-points and divinely placed. The guy should buy a lottery ticket...

Oh, no - of course not! What's wrong with you?

His .45 will be confiscated. When he goes to renew his license to carry, and after he submits the forms in triplicate to his local Chief of Police, there will be the normal delay of 8-12 months. Then, there's the issue of his next Permission to Purchase a Handgun and Firearm Purchaser ID Card. He will surely want to renew both of these before age 21, and that will take quite a bit of time. Before he can get another .45 to shoot YT again, then, there will be quite a bit of time for hime to take an anger management class.

Remember, this is New Jersey. Every single purchase REQUIRES PERMISSION, thanks to Governor Christie's determination to Stop Gun Violence™
