A Most Dangerous Journey: Tracing the Human Cost of Immigration From Altar to Arizona

At the Pima County morgue in Tucson, Ariz., anthropologist Robin Reineke was going through the personal effects of the hundreds of unnamed migrants who try to cross the border between the United States and Mexico each year but instead wind up here among the dead.

Reineke co-founded and is the executive director of the Colibri Center for Human Rights, which helps families of border crossers find missing loved ones.

It's "important for us to think about the human cost of our border today, the human cost of immigrations," she said.Reineke keeps a locker room filled with personal effects found with the migrants, from clothes to wallets to deodorant. Among the most popular items are depictions of St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes.

"People are carrying a lot of religious items with them ... rosaries, many, many prayer cards." she said. "It really, to me, indicates ... that you're planning for something where you need extra protection."The journey across the border is dangerous and carries unimaginable costs. Migrants will spend their life savings and risk death from extreme desert temperatures for a chance to live in the U.S.

Reineke keeps a book filled with notes from families on how the border crossers disappeared, including what they were wearing and pictures of what they left behind.

"They haven't found someone yet and they don't know what happened," she said. "Their son or daughter called from Altar and said, 'Mom, we're crossing the border tomorrow. As soon as we get across I am going to call you,' and they never heard anything."

Sister Mercedes, lays blame on America for having laws aside from the fact the country she is in has some of the harshest immigration laws on the books. So is the sister working along aside the coyotes ? Why is it these illegals always travel across the same places with no one in Mexico around. How many lives has Mexico claimed from those entering into their country to the south-going north ?

Cry me a river.

Furthermore, for many of these people its not difficult at all. In fact, they travel back and forth between the US and Mexico with some regularity.

Stop bringing in more immigrants.

Stop bringing in ever more imports as well.

Bring back American businesses, and American fortune.

DO THIS FIRST.

After America has been re-built, then talk about more immigration.

AFTER AMERICA HAS BEEN RE-BUILT.

Right now, America is hurting. Everyone needs to get on America’s side, and fix our own place first.

Now.

But nary a word about the personal effects collected at the sight of a horrific automobile accident caused by a drunk beaner here illegally.

When you see sob stories like this start to appear about illegals attempting to enter the US from the major propaganda media you know the push is on.

Avila who was a staffer on Chicago’s WLS is now working on network assignment.

We need immigration reform. We should adopt Mexico’s immigration laws. How would that be, ‘ster?

A secure border would end 99% of those tragedies.

Do those things and illegal aliens will deport themselves and pay for the trip.

The laws are already there. The only “reform” needed is addressing the culpability of those entrusted to enforce the laws already in existence.

Maybe they should stay the hell home and fix their own countries instead of coming here and telling us how to run OURS. They’re illegal aliens. Criminals.

I actually feel sorry for the illegal immigrants. Many are only seeking a better life. I BLAME Democrats and the GOPe for actually encouraging this migration. Talk of amnesty, benefits for illegals, and little to no serious enforcement of our immigration laws encourages people to risk sneaking in. Our political class is responsible for this mess, and an amnesty will only bring in more!

I say, enforce the law, guard the border, and take away what lures people to break our laws to sneak in. That isn’t only in our best interests. It will actually save the lives of some who (rightly) think coming here illegally is worth the risk. We must find a way to make the potential gains not worth that risk!

I see you and I agree. These deaths are the result of LAX immigration enforcement and a largely insecure border. Our amnesty-loving political class is responsible for creating the mess, because they have not done what they are sworn to do (protect America from invasion).

There is an element of responsibility for their deaths in the negligence to maintain border security. I believe in personal responsibility and the illegals carry the primarily fault for their actions but there is a secondary responsibility. Like a property owner who leaves open pits or tangles of barbed wire in disrepair and someone trespasses and injures themselves on it the property owner is liable for dangerous conditions. Everyone knows our country is attractive to illegals and everyone knows those deserts are dangerous. Pro-amnesty pols own the results of their political game playing.

Consider it something like entrapment. The illegal aliens are being aided and abetted by some Americans. The illegals are ultimately responsible, but they know the benefits currently outweigh the risks (thanks to Americans who lack the will to enforce our immigration laws).

Think of what would happen if the IRS started saying they would no longer enforce tax law. Let’s say they believe the tax laws are unfair, so they refuse to audit anyone except the most egregious tax scofflaws. Americans would still be legally required to pay of course, but let’s say it was entirely up to the taxpayer’s integrity. Let’s also say the media agreed with the IRS and kept reporting stories of how Americans were no longer paying and shouldn’t pay.

How many Americans would continue to pay their taxes if there was no enforcement? Well, you’d always have some holdouts, like Christians, who believe in following the law, but many others would be emboldened to stop paying. THAT is exactly what is happening with illegal immigration, and you can even see the illegals are becoming bolder every year. It’s a rational response to the situation.

During Lent last year, I worshipped in 29 different Catholic churches in the Pima diocese ( the county Tucson is in.) There was one very popular church that had an “immigrant graveyard” honoring those that had died in their crossing. I talked to a woman, who was very proud of their social justice work and that as a church they would go and protest at city hall for the better treatment of apprehended border crossers.

The Sunday message and bulletin from the bishop is so sympathetic towards illegals, I really have to try hard to keep my head from frying.

What these idiots don’t understand, is they are an accessory to the sin of “Those shall not steal.” Steal across the border, steal another’s identity, steal another’s place in college, steal another’s position at work, etc.

... but many others would be emboldened to stop paying.

And the IRS would randomly enforce the law on some anyway without mercy ... to complete the analogy.

"Come into my parlor said the spider to the fly."

The FedMob has become a truly evil entity.

We must stop this. We must IMMEDIATLY build a fence so that these tragedies cannot happen.
We have to do it For The Children!

For every illegal criminal the government subsidizes, an American veteran is left out in the cold with reduced benefits.
