The first rule of public relations disasters is to change the narrative as quickly as possible. With that in mind, Ill give Family Glazer a cookie for their rapid response in turning the 4-12 stench that was sooooo last season into a Loviefest.
Well done.
New coach Lovie Smith is a proven winner with local ties, and having a team that competes for the playoffs every year would certainly be refreshing.
Call me jaded, though, on at least one big point. Im not sure even winning automatically will fill Raymond James Stadium every Sunday and beyond. I think fans are going to cheer with their hearts but stay skeptical with their wallets, at least for a while.

Smith wasn’t the GM, Jerry Angelo was in charge of those drafts that didn’t bring in enough good players, he got fired too.
As a Viking fan, I was glad to see Tampa hire him, so he doesn’t come here.
Last year the Bears were simply the SECOND BEST team in the NFC Central. Go look at the stat's.
One of the things that got Lovie Smith fired was the fact that he was 1-0 against the Green Bay Packers. Ask any Chicago Bears fan -- that's not acceptable. Especially when you can't make the Playoff's without beating the Pack.
You really think .556 isn't that bad? I don't know what job you're in, but if I was only right 50% of the time I'd get FIRED. Thankfully for Chicago Bears fans, that's what happened to Smith. The Bears SHOULD HAVE fired him 3 years ago, but the milquetoast McCaskey family was afraid of being called RACISTS by Jesse Jackson. They had to let the clamor for Smith to get fired build before they did it.
True, the GM brings in the players but it’s the job/responsibility of the Head Coach to tell the GM what types of players he needs to field a winning team, is it not?
Lovie Smith changes coordinators like other head coaches change socks.
It’s never his fault, it’s always his offensive or defensive coordinator’s fault. And if his coordinator is too good, he’ll get rid of him to - see Ron Rivera.
Lovie Smith is not a good NFL Head Coach.
10-6 isn’t a bad record, yeah they missed the playoffs, but that happens, it takes a lot of bad luck for 10-6 to land you 3rd in the division. And it’s the NFC North.
It isn’t that bad. Sports isn’t like regular jobs. For one thing the entire league is structured to push teams TO a 500 record, that’s what the whole parity “any given Sunday” thing is all about, every team having a shot in every game. So being over 500 for a career means being BETTER than the goal of the sport.
They should have fired him 3 years ago?! You mean the year they went 11-5 and made it to the conference finals and probably would have won the game if the QB hadn’t gotten hurt? Really? I think your hatred of Smith has some fact based issues.
No. It’s the job of the GM to know the talent and whether they’re aging and where to spend the money and who to draft replacements for. The coach and GM need together to figure out what type of team they have and what they’re trying to field, but in the end the GM makes all personnel decisions and if the personnel are bad that’s on the GM not the coach.
Nope, facts are what they are. 11-5 was only because they were the best team in the worst division in the NFL and they got LUCKY. Go look at who they played that year along with those teams win/loss records. It was pretty damn hard for the Bears to NOT go 11-5.
.556 career w/Bears is NOT a winning record. Stats don't lie.
Bottom line: GM and Head Coach “figure it out together” as you said .... so Smith was culpable in bad personnel decisions. You and I can argue back and forth who’s more culpable, but the reality is “both of them.”
You’ve got an excuse for everything. You don’t fire a coach that goes 11-5 and makes it to the conference finals. You just don’t. And only a person that’s got unreasonable hate even thinks that.
Actually 556 IS a winning record, being as winning records are anything over 500. Like you said, stats don’t lie, and the stats say you’re full of crap. Have a nice day.
The bottom line is the GM makes personnel decisions. Actually the bottom line is they both got fired but Angelo is still out of a job which really tells you all you need to know.
Yeah, what happened to the Texans this year was a surprise to me.
BTW, why does that cheerleader have dirty knees and what appears to be an adams apple? (Nevermind, I don't want to know ...)
Yes, it says quite a bit. But then, Lovie Smith's the Buc's affirmative action hire as I said above.
You a Buc's fan?
WHY?... Because if you can't do it with Chicago then the odds of doing it in Tampa are far less. Tampa has ALWAYS been burdened with negative issues that no coach has been able to overcome.
Smith will make a lot of money but will NOT overcome the negative issues anymore than coach Schiano did.
That year the Bears were in the NFC title game there was an interesting anomaly...the team they beat to get there, the Seattle Seahawks, were statistically the worst playoff team in NFL history.
Tampa Bay won a Superbowl only a dozen years ago.
But the Seahawks had beaten the Saints in the WC round to advance. You don’t get to pick your opponents, you just gotta beat em.
