Rise of the exorcists in Catholic Church
telegraph.co.uk ^ | 1/4/2014 | Nick Squires, Rome

Dioceses across Italy, as well as in countries such as Spain, are increasing the number of priests schooled in administering the rite of exorcism, fabled to rid people of possession by the Devil.

The rise in demonic cases is a result of more people dabbling in practices such as black magic, paganism, Satanic rites and Ouija boards, often exploring the dark arts with the help of information readily found on the internet, the Church said.

The increase in the number of priests being trained to tackle the phenomenon is also an effort by the Church to sideline unauthorised, self-proclaimed exorcists, and its tacit recognition that belief in Satan, once regarded by Catholic progressives as an embarrassment, is still very much alive.

The trend comes four decades after the 1973 release of The Exorcist, the American horror film based on the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and attempts to exorcise her by two priests.

The diocese of Milan recently nominated seven new exorcists, the bishop of Naples appointed three new ones a couple of years ago and the Catholic Church in Sardinia sent three priests for exorcism training in Rome, amid concern that the Mediterranean island, particularly its mountainous, tradition-bound interior, is a hotbed of occultism.

It is NOT “fabled.”

Only about 10 years ago did I stop having nightmares from that.

And may God richly bless the Springfield, IL bishop (Paprocki) who held an exorcism the same day that same sex marriage was passed.

No kidding, but we should give the guy a break. He's probably a secular reporter. Possession to him is like something out of grimm's fairy tales. :)

Folks who are truly possessed are in dire need. I am sure it happens. Yes, it's rare, but I don't think some of these people realize just how deadly serious the situation is when they begin "dabbling".

While the article is rife with error, and smug in its ignorance, it does make an important point. The devil never rests. By ignoring his presence and actions, we put our souls in great danger.

Fortunately, the Most Holy Name of Jesus is stronger than any demon or evil force. We can’t be forced to do anything, but we must rely on Jesus to strengthen us against the snares and wickedness of the devil.

“Folks who are truly possessed are in dire need. I am sure it happens.”

Truly terrifying. I’m a P.K. and our (independent Baptist) church supported many missionaries on foreign fields. Some would use our parsonage as home base the times they were in the U.S. on furlough. We heard many stories of people being possessed, and the casting out of those demons.

So... when I went to see The Exorcist and many in the theater were laughing, I was terrifed. That was mid-’70s, I guess, and it’s still terrifying.

I started reading the book, until I came to the blasphemous rantings, then I tossed it into the garbage.

It must have been nervous laughter because there was absolutely nothing funny about it.

The first thought I had when I found this article was wondering if the demand for exorcisms in DC and Chicago is rising dramatically.

I’m not usually a believer in such things, but all political joking aside, given recent events, you really wonder if some people really ARE possessed.

Oh how true! I never realized how dangerous it is to "play" with a Ouija board.

After watching the paranormal show "A Haunting" I'll never go near one.

One of my husband’s old girlfriends got into occultism and Ouija boards while they were dating. Her personality went from normal to withdrawn and morose, to insane. She tried to cave in his skull with an object, and she once launched herself, screaming, onto the hood of his car as he was leaving.

At the time, I was acquainted with the girl through work, and I can attest to her personality change. No one ever knew how she would react from day to day.

I read the book before the movie came out and my fertile imagination made it even scarier than it already was.
To this day, I keep the remote real close when I watch the movie.
