Chicago Teachers Union Demands Schools Close Monday Due To Weather
CBS Chicago ^

Posted on 01/05/2014 1:54:20 PM PST by matt04

The Chicago Teachers Union is demanding that CPS close all schools due to the extreme cold that is forecast for Monday.

“Right now, CPS and the City of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management are sending confusing and mixed messages to the public about what to do,” said CTU President Karen GJ Lewis in a press release. “We believe common sense would dictate that CPS should close schools with at least 10 inches of snow already on the ground and a record-breaking low temperature of -10 degrees forecast for Monday.”

...

Schools throughout the Chicago area have announced school closings for Monday, including Northwestern, DePaul and the University of Chicago. CTU says CPS should close Monday too.

“We expect nothing less when it comes to paying attention to the well-being of the children and teachers we serve,” Lewis said. “In light of the forecast, sending children to school in such dangerous weather conditions shouldn’t even be an option for parents.”

We had a huge rural district with no more than a dozen or so students within a mile of the school.

From a post on FB, a teacher I know said that CPS said that kids missing school would be given an excused absence.

In light of that, if they are telling the kids not to come in, it seems like they should just close for the teachers and other staff.

I have a semi-heated garage (meaning it's attached to the house on two sides and doesn't get anywhere near as cold as it is outside) so I'm not worried about it starting in the morning.

I'm worried about parking it all day (about 12 hours) in an open parking lot during the day subject to the cold, wind and snow and I'm worried it wouldn't start in the evening.

Doesn't matter now!

That’s lame! I would still be open selling toasted cheese sandwiches, drinks and fries. Hell all the profit is in the drinks and fries.

What makes your comment truly funny, is that there are those who think that way.

Its the governments responsibility to feed them AND its the governments job to make sure they stay safe and warm.

Projected wind-chills for tomorrow. Tom Skilling is one of Chicago's best weathermen with a great track record for being correct.

I don't think it's funny, I think it's pretty sad actually. Yes, it's true there are ALOT of parents of Chicago Public School kids who don't feed their kids -- the school's do it.

About 15 years ago when I worked for a large advertising agency in Chicago (Leo Burnett) we did alot of volunteer work, one year we spent a number of weekends rehabbing kitchens and pantries in Chicago Public Schools in some pretty poor neighborhoods. It was painfully obvious that were it not for the meals these kids got at school they'd probably go hungry. These schools fed these kids 365 days a year.

Not saying it's right, not saying I agree schools should feed the kids ... just saying what's happening.

One of the things I love about Maine Governor Paul LePage:

He was the CEO of a well known and beloved company in Maine called Mardens. Mardens is the Maine place to go for salvage, closeouts, bargans. At least 12 stores in the state. Good business.

As Governor he found that the state office workers were going home early or not having work for any little snow spit up in Maine, and there are many. Meanwhile businesses throughout Maine opened, even on the tough days.

So he decreed that if Mardens is open, the state is open.

I love him.

The manager would have posted that sign. Had to,since the hourly employees can’t read or write.

Here. These are for you. You seem to see things only in black and white, in a simplistic manner. You like to paint everyone in certain categories with a broad brush, not allowing for individualities. So here. Go crazy!

I don't think my elementary school EVER held classes when it was snowing.

Of course, in Guantanamo Bay, we never had any. Hurricanes, sure. But no snow or ice.

Darn straight. Better than someone like you who routinely slams whole groups of people based on the behavior of a few. And you an outsider, too. You don’t even know what goes on in a classroom these days, I’ll bet.

There are plenty of good conservative teachers here at FR that I get along with just fine. You’re the only one who seems to have a problem.

You are dismissed.

This is a crucial time for children to learn about the new family dynamic.

You know, the one about two dads or two moms. A slight variation on this that was just discovered, is one mom lives in Hawaii and one dad lives in DC.

The chillrun need to learn this stuff...

“Bunch of wimps, when I went to grade school in Arlington
Heights we walked all the time, sometimes the snow
would be piled up on either side of the side walk”

It isn’t the snow, Mr. Macho. It’s the icy cold of -15 degrees as the high (meaning even colder in the morning) on Monday, along with 22 mph winds, making the wind chill factor even much worse. Use your head, not your testosterone.
