Hero firefighter Andrew Wood ignored his own injuries to save three police officers from carnage...

THE first question a hero firefighter asked when he woke up in hospital yesterday was: "How are the blokes I helped?"

Despite suffering severe facial injuries during the Middle Park blast on Saturday, Andrew Wood risked all to pull three police officers from the carnage.

But when he awoke in hospital, Mr Wood's first concern was the welfare of the officers he selflessly tried to save.

Mr Wood, who is now home with his family, dragged two police from the horror scene seconds after the blast then returned to the building to rescue a female officer despite suffering severe burns.

He is expected to be nominated for a bravery award after re-entering the Hambleton St unit badly burned to pluck the woman to safety and treat her until paramedics arrived.

Andrew Wood lived that yesterday. And he got three people out. His colleague Wayne Sheridan rescued another.

I still remember a picture from a couple of years ago showing a woman trying to make herself jump from a window of a burning building. Below her, the firemen all raised their arms to her, calling to her to jump, ready to take the damage to their faces and bodies as a jumper landed right on top them. The glow of the fire and the selfless faces of those looking up, promising to catch her, urging her to do it. No hesitation. Breathtaking.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

This is the ultimate creed of those who choose to protect us as a profession, but it’s also found in noble acts of the average man or woman to protect another. I wish this man Godspeed on his recovery.

Law enforcement, fire fighters, and military are the only jobs I know where they know that they might not come home when they leave for work.

But they still get up and go to work.

This,to me,is just about the most powerful single image of 9/11...this,and the photos of people falling from the towers. This piece posted by naturalman is just another example of firemen's bravery.
