Licensed to drive [Editorial]Our view: Allowing undocumented immigrants to drive
Baltimore Sun ^ | January 6, 2014 | Baltimore Sun

Last week, Maryland joined a handful of other states that allow undocumented immigrants to drive legally on state roads, to register vehicles and to buy auto insurance. That's good public policy because it not only will make the state's roads safer for everyone who uses them but also help those living in the country without legal permission achieve a measure of self-sufficiency. Thousands of residents who previously either feared getting behind the wheel at all or who risked arrest or worse for driving without a license reportedly are now lining up to take the MVA written exam and road test. It should be obvious to anyone who depends on a car for getting back and forth to work, ferrying schoolchildren or running errands that the safety of everyone on the road is increased when all motorists have had to demonstrate a minimum level of competence in driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws. Protecting public safety is, after all, the main reason states require drivers to be licensed; the fact that government-issued licenses are also widely used as photo ID cards is an important but secondary consideration in deciding who can legally drive. That is why the state legislature approved the creation of a two-tiered licensing system in Maryland last year that allows the state to confer driving privileges on people regardless of their immigration status. Previously, state-issued identification cards had to meet a variety of strict federal security standards, including one that mandated licenses be issued only to people who could prove they were in the country legally. But relying on the Motor Vehicle Administration to enforce immigration laws was never a wise policy. Under Maryland's system, applicants who can't document their immigration status

Undocumented immigrants are less likely to leave the scene of an accident or attempt to flee from police if they know a traffic stop won't automatically get them deported for driving without a license, Right illegal drunk drivers will reamin at an accident site. All illegals will have insurance, right this will end once the cost of insurance is needing a payment each month. Illegals across the country will be bused in as it was in TN ad New Mex Mexico to name a few.Child credit tax fraud I suppose the sun thinks it's a myth thousands of irs checks for illegals going to the same address.

We're way past sanity in this country. There's a problem with invaders who are driving without licenses, a real menance on the roads. The ONLY rational solution is to send them home. They're criminals because they're in the US illegally. They're flaunting that when they drive. Of course they should get a one way ticket home, stay out of the US forever.

How long can a nation exist, running full throttle on crazy?

The 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country aren't going anywhere, but many of them are going to end up driving regardless of whether they are licensed. Maryland's system admittedly may be less than ideal; it would be far better for Congress to finally enact comprehensive immigration reform that allows a path to citizenship and legal residence for undocumented immigrants.

Wow. Barf-alert. Translation: 'Cause they'll vote 'our way'. Permit me to be creative rather than barf up my breakfast:

The 200 million undocumented gun owners in the country aren't going anywhere, but many of them are going to end up owning guns regardless of whether it is 'legal'; it would be far better for Congress to finally enact comprehensive Constitutional political reforms and negate the Federal, State & Local processes of UN-Constitutional actions against US citizens that make being born under the US Constitution and exercising God-given Rights 'illegal'.

Liberalism truly is a mental disorder

"That's good public policy because it not only will make the state's roads safer for everyone who uses them but also help those living in the country without legal permission achieve a measure of self-sufficiency."

The author is wrong. Well, totally missing the point. "...those living in the country without legal permission..." THEY ARE CRIMINALS. Why are we trying to make their lives easier? Hey, why don't we mandate that all kids school pictures have to be posted online - that'll make pedophile's lives easier. Lets make sure the police have to announce the location of DUI checkpoints 72 hours in advance so that drunk drivers' lives will be easier.

What a dumb-a** idea. We don't want to make illegals' lives easier - we want them out of the country. Every single one of them is an insult to all those people who went by the book, followed legal procedure and immigrated here. To them I say welcome aboard. To the illegals I say get the {expletive} out! I do not want fellow citizens whose first concerted act on entering the US was in fact to break laws. If we want to and need to reform immigration policy and procedure fine, lets do it. But step one is not just throwing the law out the window and ignoring, even aiding and abetting criminal behavior.

I say we reform immigration policy then we give illegals here an ultimatum. They have a 1 week grace period to leave on their own accord and then follow the new procedures (whatever they may be) to immigrate legally. After that grace period expires though they are a hunted species. Anyone found here illegally after that will be photographed, fingerprinted, and DNA sampled. Then they will be charged for the costs and the bus ride to the border and shoved back across it. They will never be allowed in the US again - not to immigrate, not to work, not even to visit as a tourist on a passport. Not allowed to set foot on US soil ever again. If they are found on US soil again they are summarily executed as a hostile foreign invader. I think that would make a pretty good incentive for illegals to self-deport and come back legally at a later date.

You made my point for me and much clearer than I; my head wasn’t clear enough to not be a smart-a$$.

I think you get the dichotomy of my comment though...

One thing you didn’t to mention and equally important imho: Ending the ‘naturalization’ of children born to illegal immigrants in the US.

Not specifically referring to illegals, but unlicensed drivers, something very peculiar happened in Florida some years ago. A spokesman for their state highway patrol said something that surprised just about everyone.

He said that at least 500,000 people in the state drove without driver’s licenses, and that to even ticket such people, much less arrest them, consumes so many resources and cost so much money, that it would be better if they were just ignored.

He then said that the state police had reached the conclusion that having a license did not reflect on the ability to drive safely, and it was far more important to focus on bad drivers, licensed or not, because they were the ones that drove while intoxicated, created accidents, injured and killed others. Getting them off the street should be the priority.

He concluded that it was not the purpose of driver’s licenses to be proof of identity, though that was their main use, and that people could get state identity cards cheaper for that purpose.

He added as an afterthought that though that really wasn’t the case, many people desired driver’s licenses, as well as vehicle registrations and required insurance, so they should continue to be issued, just that there should be no penalties for not having a license. If the vehicle is registered and insured, this should be enough.

After considerable published outrage from the state government, a week later the state police issued a retraction.

Allowing undocumented immigrants to drive

They are not "undocumented immigrants." They are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Calling them "undocumented immigrants" is like calling shoplifting an "undocumented sale."

Having been read ended by an illegal alien with no insurance I can tell you that it is a wonderful journey, almost like playing the game Clue.

Mr Sanchez registered his car in Mass, had a Maine license plate, and a drivers license from New Hampshire. Provided no insurance info after the accident, was not located at the address of record, and never found him. My insurance company said not to worry since I PAY extra for "Uninsured Motorist". And we wonder why our insurance is so expensive.

There shouldn’t be on the table if the law was followed and they were kicked out and not allowed back in.

From Balt-Sun Link :”That is why the state legislature approved the creation of a two-tiered licensing system in Maryland last year that allows the state to confer driving privileges on people regardless of their immigration status. Under Maryland's system, applicants who can't document their immigration status can still obtain a valid drivers license, albeit one that can't be used to verify their identity as airline passengers or visitors to federal facilities.”

This was a Martin O Malley (in Maryland) idea and I thought it died ~ 2 years ago. It seemed that the Baltimore Sun poo-pooed it back then.

Read closely, illegals get a special drivers license that can't be used to get on flights at airports.

This means their drivers licenses basically identify them as a illegals.

The government can no longer claim they don't know who is or is not legal.

I heard a clip of Rand Paul this morning supporting an amnesty bill. Sounds like he plans on running in 2016.

Well, they already vote.

This is just the next step leading to open borders by the "One World" freaks, and total amnesty. If I were Driver's License tester in a state that allowed criminal aliens to get licenses, I'd fail them every time!

RE :”The question is: Can they use the license as ID to VOTE????”

This is Maryland, they don't ID to vote.

However to register to vote there are some requirements like an ID or SS #.
I cant find where they verify US citizenship vs say a Green card.

Nevada legislature also voted for illegals to have driver’s Cards-—NOT to be used for ID.

The DMV has been swamped.

OVER 75% of those who applying are NOT able to pass the written test—even in Spanish.

Tell me again how the local roads will be safer with such people out there.

The arguement that they can now have better transportation ‘to get to their jobs’ is another insult.

THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HIRED IN THE USA.....THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY!!!!!

From what I can find Maryland does not verify US citizenship to register to vote, they accept a drivers license # or SS ## for registration. And a legal resident with a Green Card can have those.

The application requires them to swear that they are a US citizen under law on the application, that’s it.

So non-citizens can easily vote here illegally if they want to.

RE :”It suddenly occurs to me that's why the Clintons implemented “motor voter” duh for me.’

There is no Federal citizen ID for states to use for this. Legal non-citizens can legally get drivers licenses (even before this) and SS numbers.

So its up to the states to verify citizenship after registration.

the safety of everyone on the road is increased when all motorists have had to demonstrate a minimum level of competence in driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws

WTF? How is this established?

If someone "illegal" fails the test, does the author really think the driver will NOT continue driving anyway??? Illegal immigrants are scofflaws to PLENTY of testing, background checks, regulation, taxes, identification, etc.

Better yet illegals get marked drivers licenses that they cant use as government IDs for stuff like flights.

Yep, they get special illegal alien licenses. Any police officer pulling them over can see that they are illegal.
