Ready ... aim ... point ... talk - Gun at meeting reportedly rattles foreign delegates

Jerome M. Hauer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's director of homeland security, took out his handgun and used the laser sighting device attached to the barrel as a pointer in a presentation to a foreign delegation, according to public officials. It happened Oct. 24 in Albany at the highly secure state emergency operations center below State Police headquarters.

These officials, one of whom claimed to be an eyewitness, said that three Swedish emergency managers in the delegation were rattled when the gun's laser tracked across one of their heads before Hauer found the map of New York, at which he wanted to point.

Hauer, commissioner of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, was disabled by a stroke a few years ago and can be unsteady. He isn't a law enforcement official. He carries the loaded 9-millimeter Glock in a holster into state buildings, an apparent violation of state law barring state employees from bringing weapons to the workplace, several witnesses say.

The incident with the Swedish delegation occurred during a two-hour briefing at the operations center concerning the state's response to Superstorm Sandy, according to one of the officials.

Blatant idiocy. If a regular citizen did something like this, he would be jailed and prosecuted for felonies.

Some animals are more equal than others.

I have no problem with the man carrying a gun. I have a big problem with him breaking the Second of the Four Rules of Safe Gun Handling.

To review:

1. The gun is always loaded
2. Do not point the gun at anything you do no want to destroy
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
4. Know your target and what is beyond it.

Laser pointers went out of favor over ten years ago. Anyone still using one today needs to take a refresher course in communication & presentation skills. Nothing is more distracting during a training session than a laser dot swimming around in the middle of a power point slide.

More proof that liberals should never be armed unless accompanied by an adult.

Typical liberal irresponsibility involving firearms, stroke patient notwithstanding. I’m really starting to get onboard with the “liberalism is a mental illness” notion, and that liberals in general ought to be banned from owning firearms or attempting to regulate non-liberal who owns one.

What is the “in favor” method of pointing at a ppt slide?

I suspect the presenter was trying to be cute. Kind of like, “Let’s have a little fun with these fish-smoking Swedes, and show them how we roll in America”.

But a gun is not cute. An unholstered weapon is a deadly serious thing, and should not be used as a joke.

Actually, there is one thing more distracting... Having a loaded gun pointed at you head!

Lasers on firearms are pretty useless in most situations anyway. Unless, of course, you are a mall ninja or a certified “operator”.

Completely irresponsible and dangerous, especially for someone who had a stroke and can be “unsteady”. Even IF he took the laser off the gun before use it is still a stupid move.

Exactly. And I am a big fan of LTC Cooper’s rules, from back when they were what they were/are, and the NRA was running a huge ridiculous list.

Ever see someone at the range trying to acquire a target fast using their lazer? Its pretty funny. Open or dot sites are much faster.

Well.
Another indication of the weak caliber of the Cuomo administration.

Oh, and I don’t mean 9mm.

Per Wiki, he is also a Giuliani fellow traveler and famous for......drum roll please.

“Jerome Hauer is best known for being the director of the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) when he made the decision to build a $13 million crisis center on the 23rd floor at 7 World Trade Center.[1] This crisis center was unveiled in June 1999, and became the subject of tension between the agency and the Police Department, whose own command center at 1 Police Plaza had until then been the focus of emergency preparedness operations.

As the first director of the new crisis center, “one of Hauer’s first tasks was to find a home for an emergency command center to replace the inadequate facilities at police headquarters,” according to the Times. The site selected, was immediately controversial because it was part of the World Trade Center complex (although not in one of the Twin Towers), which had already been the location of a truck bomb attack in 1993. City officials, though, including Mr. Hauer, have long defended their decision, even after the command center had to be evacuated during the 2001 terror attack. The Emergency Operation Center was widely hailed as the finest such facility in the nation, receiving visitors from around the world and serving as a model for others.

The center was destroyed when the 47-story tower collapsed at about 5:25 p.m. on 9-11.”

Thats really old school. The only problem I have with laser pointers is that many dont work on video screens and using the screen cursor is awkward.

Some animals are more equal than others.

Especially here in the People's Republic of New York where active and retired law enforcement are exempt from the unSafe Act.
