After the federal governments school-lunch standards were overhauled in 2012 in what Im sure was a very well-intentioned effort to institute healthier habits in Americas children and help stave off of the countrys growing childhood obesity problem, it didnt take long for the calorie-intake and portion restrictions in the new code to crash and burn spectacularly. Healthy eating habits being the highly individualized needs and preferences that they are, kids and parents quickly began complaining that students were not able to get enough to eat at lunchtime, and in some districts, school-lunch participation began to drop as more and more students started bringing their own lunches to school. The USDA soon implemented a temporary stay on the rules, and they just made the changes permanent seeing as how the restrictions were never very well thought out in the first place. NPR explains:

Another know-it-all government FAIL.
Nanny State PING!
And....now....they are going to run your HEALTH care.....oh joy.
The whole effing fraudulent school lunch program needs to be cancelled.
Is this the program Moooochelle was behind?
Time for the USDA to eat their own peas and let the kids be kids.
Nothing the left does works for anyone but them. Control is all they care about.
Thanks for the ping!
I always thought success came from fairy farts and good intentions. I’m so disappointed! LOL!
Time to really question why does the USDA tell us what to eat, and what commercial enterprise gains by their telling us to eat their stupid way.
Wheat and baby cow’s food?
Red meat as a staple?
Once again, the mandatory “solution” is rushed into effect without any actual forethought or tabletop contingency planning, only to discover that not only was it unnecessary, it actually made things worse. Libs are the Wile-E Coyote of politics.
Oh yeah. She’s in Hawaii like a cliquey debutante letting her cohorts in crime take the rap
Well this is an easy problem to solve...just ban kids from bringing their own lunches from home!
I would have all teachers and other government workers live by their food rules. I would have free, privately employeed citizens given the right to turn the individual state worker food level ALL the way to ZERO. Have the drivers license employees slow roll you, no more food. Have the IRS (who does not produce squat) audit or fine your private business for trumped up reasons...no more food for them. If BHO-stinks limits your free market health insurance no food for him or his fat wookie. And if insurance is directed by the state, the people should all have a vote for 0bama’s and the rest of the statist workers health care that shall be administered all at the same time. Let Zero and statists get some tyrany splashed back on htheir head!!!
This isn’t about the ‘reduced/free’ lunch program. It’s about the content/portion size of what ANY school can offer its students.
A while back the wife and I decided to eat “healthy”, or, “healthy-ER”, and bought some of that bird seed and sticks cereal. I broke a tooth and ended up losing it. I threatened to sue and got the crown paid for and a few grand for pain and suffering. And believe me, there was pain and suffering. From now on if I want to eat cereal it’ll be frosted flakes.
Please....don't use those two words in the same sentence.....I am going to have nightmares.
Human children don’t like Wookie food. Whoulda thunk it!?!
One size fits all laws and regulation can not work for the simple fact that people are individuals each with their own values needs and wants. Socialism always fails on this point.
The real problem isn’t the particular rules, it’s central control.
School lunch menus are exactly the sort of thing that needs local control. For one thing, when they do mess up, it’s that much easier to correct.
Socialism always fails on every point.
Good intentions and 4 flushes of your 1.28 Gallons per flush high efficiency toilet will flush that turd. It’s easy to see... as long as you haven’t replaced your incandescent bathroom light with a CFL.
“just ban kids from bringing their own lunches from home!”
IIRC, this has been done in some schools.
Just abolish all federal government involvement in the education program in every way.
The arrogance of that fat-assed bovine Michelle to insinuate herself into what America’s kids eat... unbelievable.
My strongest memories of grade school were of being hungry. I had a good breakfast and a good diner at home and I ate every scrap at school and was starving an hour later. This was in the 1960’s and I was a skinny rail. I’m guessing that if the kid is not fat and still hungry he’s growing. There were no vending machines and if there were I wouldn’t have had a dime anyway.
Typical liberal method - NEVER think about unintended consequences.
Now lets cancel a bunch of other programs that aren't working out so well, either? Hmmm. I wonder where we should start?
I am AWARE of what the article is ABOUT!
Now what imperial madame’s name is missing from the 2012 overhaul description?
“My strongest memories of grade school were of being hungry. I had a good breakfast and a good diner at home and I ate every scrap at school and was starving an hour later.”
My High School actually had pretty damn good lunches. They had a good variety of food and it tasted good. Everything was cooked in-house.
They would fill every compartment on your tray with whatever you wanted from the menu, and bread was free. A tray full of apple crisp was A-OK with them.
Every table had a big bowl of peanut butter, one of jelly, and one of real butter, also free.
Cartons of whole milk ( chocolate or white) were 2 cents and lunch was 35 cents. You could get stuffed for less than 50 cents. A dime would buy you 5 cartons of milk and all the PB+J sandwiches you could eat.
In elementary school, I pretty much had a PB&J sandwich for lunch every day. I never got tired of it, either. What an invention!
” A dime would buy you 5 cartons of milk and all the PB+J sandwiches you could eat.”
Paradise. Our lunches were planned by a school “nutritionist.” She had definite theories about fat kids.
I was in a rural area of MI, mostly farm kids. Not much fat on those kids.
If you are AWARE of what the article is ABOUT
Why, then, don’t you explain a) how “the whole effing fraudulent school lunch program” is fraudulent and b) why “the whole effing fraudulent school lunch program needs to be cancelled” vs just the reduced/free lunch program?
Why don’t you don’t do your OWN EFFING research!
Actually, as you certainly know, the Wookiee eats the king of food the kids would looooove to eat.
Lobster? Enroll me in that school! ;^)
Research? Who are you kidding? You opine without any backup then tell others to research your unsubstantiated claim. Whatever. (BTW, you sound like my adolescent son when he learned a new word, “effing,” all in caps, too, and couldn’t stop using it.)
Opinions are like EDINVAs. Everyone has one.
