I asked my son, who has a meteorology degree about this. He said it was nothing new—there’s always a big cap of cold air over the North Pole in Winter. Sometimes it spills into Siberia, sometimes it spills into Canada. It’s not like the mythical tropospheric hurricanes of “The Day After Tomorrow.”
What is new, apparently, is that the media has seized on a new magic fright phrase—polar vortex.

It’s 4.6 degrees F in beautiful, downtown Davidsonville, MD. While that is unusually cold for these climes, it’s hardly unheard of. A quick search reveals that the record low in this little hamlet in Maryland is -8 degrees F, set in 1984.
