I don’t recall reading the trains loosing power, so presumably the engines were still running.

Would have thought so, there is not much chance of stopping the engine on a diesel electric with snow.
However a severed brake hose with a frozen ‘shut off’ valve does tend to be fatal to the loco's health.
Likewise snow in electric motors cooling vents.
12ft of snow just has a presence all of its own.
