Jobless benefits bill clears key Senate hurdle, over GOP complaints on cost(Reid's subject change)

A controversial jobless benefits bill narrowly cleared a key Senate hurdle on Tuesday, over the objections of Republicans who complain the $6 billion measure is not paid for.

Senators voted 60-37 to advance the bill extending long-term jobless benefits, which expired Dec. 28. Democrats needed 60 votes to move the bill forward.

But Republicans blasted Democratic leaders for pushing the bill without any plan to offset the cost elsewhere in the budget.

"This is all borrowed -- every penny of it," Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., told Fox News.

Backers of the extension still need to clear several additional votes in the Senate, before the GOP-controlled House can even consider it. House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, of Maryland, voiced hope that the Senate could pressure the House to act on the bill.

Cut the Vets benefits, but toss “free” money at the bums who won’t take a job after 2 years. I am amazed at the dispicable immorality of our government.

so the socialist D leadership is going to spend more of our tax money to create more unemployment ... instead of allowing the economy to recover and provide real jobs for people.

we just HAVE to vote these destructive people OUT in 2014!

pray for America!

If the Republicans had anything between their ears they’d block this unless its coupled with the Pipeline.

Fox is reporting that Obama has gathered a group of long-term unemployed “victims” for a “scathing speech and photo op” moments after this was defeated.

Pubbies not taking the bait apparently.

I might consider an extension deal only if it included an immediate drawdown of the benefits. Those who have been repeatedly extended should expect $10 or $20 less with each successive check.

However the democrats would vow to pass it separately then dump the deal as soon as they got the extension.

Obama is spewing the mantra, "Unemployment benefits create jobs and stimulate the economy."

King O also blamed Bush for the current jobless situation. The recession was so bad, people are still unemployed.

I don’t think the votes are there in the HOuse unless they can figure a way to pay for it.

The Pipeline provides jobs. Coupling this to the popular Pipeline issue puts the Dems on the defensive.

Immediately after the vote Obama put a unemployed woman on TV as his lead in.

She thanked Obama for trying to save her family with this bill. She said she needs it to pay the bills and she gets up every day looking for a job.

Now he is on TV (MSNBC showing it) praising the unemployed and explaining that they are victims, ‘working their tails off trying to get jobs’.

Says they cant look for a job without this $$$ to pay for gas to get to interviews and cell phone bill.(they been off > 100 weeks!)

Agreed. Pretty much everything the republicans vote on should be tied to cutting regulations and taxes in some way.

Why is a spending bill originating in the Senate?

“This is all borrowed — every penny of it,”
Yay! Free money!

Voters love free money, and the media gets a 5 to 10 per cent cut of it in advertising costs. What could go wrong?

the reason they have been out of work over 100 weeks already is because Obama and his people have been destroying American jobs en masse

also, there really is a problem with some of these folks not being willing to work (they can make more by sitting on their butts at home watching Oprah reruns, just by collecting all the dole checks and benefits including “extended” (meaning, welfare) unemployment for years and years and years)

the local small business people complain that nobody wants to work anymore, and they can’t fill their vacant jobs.

this is destroying the American economy and needlessly turning many perfectly good, able-bodied people into useless welfare bums... we get what we pay for...

RE :”Why is a spending bill originating in the Senate?”

Because they don't think the House will pass one first.

Technically he never mentioned Bush but it was implied there.

Here's an irony.

Let's bet that this is a demographic setup as photo ops go.

Normally, it's difficult to find a white face among his photo ops. Michelle's ops....A white kid is almost unheard of.

Bet this one is full of whites.
