I think an infection starts after a period on that machine. My husband was put on one and he had no infection at the time (he had cancer). After being on the machine a few days, he developed an infection and we had to wear gowns and masks to go in the room from then on. He was not dead at the time he was put on the machine and not dead when they took it off.
