Eliana Johnsons National Review piece on MSNBCs Rachel Maddow has provoked some buzz on Twitter today. Heres an excerpt:
Behind her back, colleagues call her the queen, a not so subtle suggestion that Maddow gets what Maddow wants. And what she wants is a network filled with young wonks such as Chris Hayes, Ezra Klein, Alex Wagner, and Harris-Perry, whose highbrow intellectualism can, she hopes, push the Democratic party, and the country, to the left.
Notice that (according to Johnson, at least) Maddows goal isnt to win the ratings war, but rather, to push the Democratic party, and the country, to the left.
My guess is this is an unintentional observation, but one which is, perhaps, true.
If Maddows objective (the premise of the piece is that Maddow is calling the shots, behind-the-scenes) were to create a network that garnered high ratings today, then she might be considered a failure. But one could argue that long-term political goals and short-term business objectives for a cable news network are mutually exclusive or, at least, they dont necessarily correlate.
And, if nothing else, Maddow & Co. are populating the mainstream media with young wonky pundits folks who will likely be around for decades, pushing their liberal agenda.
Now, these talking heads may not always be as attractive or charismatic as their counterparts on other networks (thats often the tradeoff with wonks), but the point is to create tomorrows opinion leaders to groom some smart, young ideological folks and grant them the imprimatur that comes with hosting a TV show (or being a regular guest).
Only time will tell if this pans out, but conservatives would do well to at least consider whether or not there might be something to learn from Team Maddow.....

We have plenty of Maddows on the right. What we really need is a
On our good speakers wishing to push this country to the right slowly!!!!!
Maddow is an idiot. She believed that the Kentucky Tea Party murdered a census worker.
She thinks that Gun Control is a political winner for at risk Democrats.
A carpet muncher?
What need does the right have for a lying sack of sow sh!!?
Filthy liars will always get their comeuppance.
Maddow is a vile stench.
We don’t want or need that. Truth always, always wins out in the end.
A girl boy?
Is that a trick question ?
Why would the right need a smug elitist moonbat....?
Rachel is very intelligent. That being said, I can’t understand why she is so far left. Most liberals are not very smart. I am hoping that one of these days she wakes up and sees the light.
We couldn’t possibly find a woman as repulsive in every sense of the word.
No one watches MSNBC.
Put the repulsive Ms R against Anne Coulter and watch the liberal be sliced, diced, chopped, cooked, and served on a platter.
There is no comparison.
In any sense.
Who is he?
And why would someone name their boy Rachel?
We’ve got Limbaugh, Levin and a host of most excellent Conservatives with microphone access.
We don’t need no stinking Madow on the Right.
She has like . what? a hundred or so people watching her miserable show?
Does anybody need a crazy broad in ugly glasses?
