What Pope Francis Can Teach the GOP
The Daily Beast ^ | 01/07/2014 | Sally Kohn

With his softer message on gay and divorced families, the pope has figured out what the Republicans haven’t grasped—you’ve got to tone it down if you want to keep a modern flock.

When the Catholic Church eclipses the Republican Party on social policy, it’s time to start looking skyward for frogs. Yesterday, when the Vatican released the pope's latest statement offering a softer tone toward the gay community than pontiffs in the past, it suggested that the Catholic Church may have figured out what the Republican Party hasn’t yet grasped—that the fading of the institution’s flock can only truly be addressed by reversing some of the fading norms driving the flock from the fold.

And so you have, just to pick one example, failed Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli saying about gay rights, “I cannot support something that I believe brings nothing but self-destruction, not only physically but of their soul.” Versus Pope Francis saying, “If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?"

Now Pope Francis has gone a step further, expressing compassion for gay families as well as families of divorce, both of which are perennial Republican targets in their puritanical and antiquated push for conservative morality. “How can we proclaim Christ to a generation that is changing?” the pope reportedly said. “We must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them.” Or voting! Step aside, Reince Priebus. The pope’s words offer some wisdom for the sagging and outdated GOP.

Official numbers released by the bishops appear to show that the Catholic "flock" isn't fading, but steadily growing. If that's truly the case, why would Francis want to reverse anything?

She knows zip about either Catholicism or conservatism. Not that the GOP is conservative but you get the point.

“What Pope Francis Can Teach the GOP”

How to use the “bad translators” excuse to cover their policies...?

When Sally Kohn starts supporting this Pope, this Pope has PR problems.

I think the tone is clear but needs more amplification from Pope Francis. The money quote is taken out of context with the question asked. But it is unfortunate that the Pope can’t see how these things would be seen for other than what they are.

Several of my more liberal mainline friends are constantly posting meme’s with that money quote. I am constantly correcting them.

For those who really just aren’t getting my soft explanations, I post this from the man was named man of the year by a homosexual magazine...

“Gay marriage is a machination of the Father of Lies to deceive the children of God.”- Pope Francis

RE: expressing compassion for gay families as well as families of divorce

How do you express compassion to someone whose lifestyle is destructive to their health and to society at large?

A) Tell them their lifestyle is acceptable to God

B) Tell them the truth about what God says in His word?

Churches in all denominations have work to do fixing things but listening to The Daily Beast isn’t one of them.

RE: “Gay marriage is a machination of the Father of Lies to deceive the children of God.”- Pope Francis

In what writing did Francis write this? Or was it a direct quote from him? If so, to whom did he make the statement and when and where?

Never mind my question. I found the quote from, of all sources, THE DAILY BEAST ( which published this article from Sally Kohn ).

Here it is:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/13/introducing-pope-francis-i-your-new-papa.html

EXCERPT:

Catholics hoping for a pope with a new attitude towards homosexuality may be disappointed with Bergoglio. He opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine government to allow same-sex marriage, writing in a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires: “Let’s not be naive, we’re not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.”

Not surprisingly, he’s also anti-abortion.

But Bergoglio has a more liberal view on contraception, which he has said may be used to prevent the spread of disease. He has also demonstrated compassion for AIDS victims, washing and kissing the feet of 12 patients in a hospice in 2001.

In a July 2010 letter to Carmelite nuns of Buenos Aires, then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio asked them to pray for the defeat of a gay marriage bill and criticized it in strong language.

“Let’s not be naïve: This is a not simple political struggle, but an attempt to destroy God’s plan. It is not just a bill but a move of the Father of Lies, who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God,” he wrote.

Homosexual ‘Marriage’ is a Machination of the Devil, Argentinean Cardinal Warns

EXCERPT:

To the clergy of the parishes, Bergoglio requests that all of them read from the pulpits a declaration defending the true definition and understanding of marriage.

“The Argentinean people will have to confront, in the coming weeks, a situation whose result could gravely injure the family. We are speaking of a bill regarding marriage between people of the same sex,” a bill that calls into question “the identity, and the survival of the family: father, mother, and children.” The latter, warns Bergoglio, might also be threatened by homosexual adoption, which would be a true form of discrimination.

Limbaugh bragged the other day that he was the only one in the country that could make the Pope popular with lefties.
