The extreme cold has prompted the organization that operates the electrical grid serving Illinois to ask consumers to turn down the thermostat and avoid using appliances like the stove, dishwasher and laundry machine between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The frigid weather has led to higher than normal electricity use and the call for conservation during peak hours is an effort to avoid more drastic measures, said a spokeswoman for PJM Interconnection, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity to 13 states including Illinois.
The last time the organization asked consumers to take such steps was in summer of 2006 after several days of sustained heat, spokeswoman Paula DuPont-Kidd said.

ROFLMAO!!! Good one.
Even in the best of times such a request makes at least some sense in extreme hot weather but this is the first time I’ve heard it due to cold weather.
Isn’t Obastard’s EPA causing coal fired power plants to shut down?
From an article last fall:
Pennsylvania plant closings will not affect grid reliability: PJM
Birmingham, Alabama (Platts)—23Sep2013/246 pm EDT/1846 GMT
FirstEnergy may deactivate two coal-fired generating stations in Pennsylvania as planned October 9 without affecting power grid reliability, the PJM Interconnection said late Friday.
The company said in July that it planned to close the 1,710-MW Hatfield’s Ferry Power station in Masontown and the 310-MW Mitchell plant in Courtney. The decision to close the units was based on the continued low market price for electricity and the cost of compliance with environmental regulations, FirstEnergy said at the time.
Initially, PJM said closing the units would affect reliability in the region, but detailed reliability studies are now complete.
I imagine a search from 2006 would find something like “due to global warming we ask consumers to turn off electrical appliances....”
Why aren’t these guys ever prepared?
No worries, the EPA is working overtime to regulate wood-burning stoves out of business.
Prepared with what? A power plant? I’m confused. You could have a generator. But there really is no point, you’d get hardly any use out of it.
Turn it up and let the grid crash... obama’s fault... globull warming mafia’s fault. THAT would wake up the zombies!
In Chicago Rahmobama closed down a coal fired plant last January. It’s the plan.
A nuclear plant went offline a few years back without a replacement power plant.
Illinois at one time had plenty of electric power, now we are talking RATIONING.
Thank you Liberals.
Their plan is to make the US just like every other socialist shit hole on earth with everyone equally miserable and poor. Well, except for the ruling elites and their toadies.
Consumption hit a record or does falling supply put more strain on the system?
If any industry needed a (refundable) subsidy to get into mass production right now, it is the production of thin sheet aerogel insulation. Were it available in vast quantity, America could probably cut its energy needs in half in a decade.
Heat and cooling costs would be slashed not just for the home itself, but for ovens and refrigerator-freezers.
But how good is aerogel as an insulator?
Blowtorch vs. Hershey’s Kiss with aerogel insulation. Be sure to note the time checks.
Up here in the PJM region there’s not a lot of difference between summer and winter demand peaks.
Wait til the smart meters are rolled out. They will be able to monitor your usage, ration you and cut off your power at the push of a button. There won’t be any more “conserve, pretty please”. The velvet glove will come off.
Record demand and no reserve. Thanks Obama!!!
That’s MSM for washer and dryer, LOL
Imagine plugging in 50 million cars....whoops...they forgot about that...
I have a feeling this has something to do with the supply contracts...It’s always about the money!!
Yep, time to turn up the heat and do the backed up laundry.
...and the wind generators froze....
Appalachian Power did an oustanding job and the weather was more ‘record breaking’ down here.
Hope they sold lots of high dollar electric to PJM.
It was so cold today, I saw a democRAT put his hands in his own pockets.
Snickers. They need to stop building wind mills and start building nukes. Then they would have plenty of power. Did I mention ditching greenie policy makers?
I had a total of eight hours of use out of mine in December with two seperate power outages.
Both were about four hours long on days with temps in the low 30's. Also had the woodstove cranked up to keep the basement at 90+ degrees since the generator isn't big enough to run the heat pump.
Yep, closing coals plants by the score then forcing all the miners out of work — all to prevent “carbon pollution” which is raising the world’s temperature. Now there’s no power to combat all the “warming.” The irony of all ironies is at work here.
I don’t think theres gonna be a better comment
They have to keep all those creeps in Washington DC warm.
Two words... government.... monopoly
That pretty much screws up anything and everything.
I remember the old bumper stickers popular in Texas .... “Drive Fast, Freeze a Yankee”
An appalling agenda.
Hee hee hee!
‘Polar vortex’ blamed for at least 21 deaths
Published January 08, 2014
So the media states that Polar vortex causes global cooling AND global warming. Which is it? Or is it both?
Time Mag Flashback: 1974 Issue Warns of Man-Made Global Cooling
By Greg Sheffield | July 24, 2006 | 09:48
Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds the so-called circumpolar vortex...
In extreme cold weather, sometimes people's heating systems just can't keep the place warm, and so they supplement that with electric heaters.
Does aerogel soak up water?A thermal insulator which is destroyed by getting wet does not make a good choice for home insulation.
It's also important to note that aerogel is extremely hydrophilic - if you put a drop of water on the sample it will soak it up like nothing you've ever seen - but this destroys the sample in the process
hansen of NASA was saying we were going into an ice age in 1971 and now he says that we are all going to boil.
I thought that was Obastard’s justification for extending unemployment benefits...
“Kathy” could turn up her thermostat, and the utility company would hire more people.
You can bet none of them are “dialing it back”,
even after they cut 10% of our electrical generating capacity
over the bogus crisis of global warming.
Yes, obama and his administration are like a diarrhea machine filled with lies.
Got that right.
But I thought all the dirty coal and ‘nukelar’ plant closings were replaced by added capacity of the solar/wind and unicornfart generators by the wun. They boasted that their ‘green’ power was more than an adequate replacement offsetting the dirty power.
Yeah I bet the enviro-weenies pushing electric cars didn’t think that one through.
That’s no real problem. They seal the aerogel between two panels.
