The U.S. is sending an additional Army combat force of 800 soldiers to South Korea with tanks and armored troop carriers.
A brief Pentagon announcement said the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment from the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, will deploy to two locations in South Korea on Feb. 1....

The South can handle the North as long as the chikoms don’t get involved. I hope the issue is settled the next time and if the chikoms don’t help they should be flooded with refugees. It’s real the Souths’ problem and we should get out.
The South can handle North Korea, they can’t handle China. We’re there to keep China out of it.
Probably related to the Dennis Rodman tour - the tanks are there to make sure he doesn’t come back across the border.
Help us out, TIA.

Since China has a better relationship with South Korea than with the North these days, this troop movement is probably just symbolism (though a few B-2’s doing low-level flyovers of Pyongyang might make the point better...)
Looks like Obama is going to trigger the trip wire and sacrifice 20K troops.
Before I ended up with my foot in my mouth, because I was almost certain I saw the article right here on FR, I double=checked:
“It is hoped that the relations of Russia and South Korea will reach a major breakthrough in 2014, South Korean Ambassador to Russia Wi Sung-lak said. “The new year will become a year of mutual visits so I expect a considerable growth in exchanges between our countries. We are certain that quantitative increase of exchange will lead to a major breakthrough in the bilateral relations,” Wi Sung-lak said.
A number of agreements have been reached during the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to South Korea, in particular an agreement on visa-free travel between the two countries, which comes effect since January 1, 2014, has been signed, the ambassador said.
Visa-free travel “will become a key event in enhancing mutual ties” in the bilateral relations, Wi Sung-lak said.
“The coming year is the Year of the Horse. Horse is a symbol of dynamics. Let new major dynamic breakthroughs occur in the Korean-Russian relations in the Year of the Horse,” the ambassador said in Russian.

2ndDivisionVet, I wonder if your reaction is akin to mine...I’m thinking - let Putin and his boys take over at the 38th parallel if South Korea and Russia are such buddies.
There are needed to fight Dennis Rodman?
South Korea has zero trust for China. They have shows on tv in south korea detailing how bad Chinese products are. They get hidden cameras into factories showing the chinese putting poison and garbage into food.
In one case the chinese factory was caught putting maggot infested spoiled meat sitting outside in the rubbish into cans.
Just my Humble Opinion.
I think that China is soooo tired of NK, that they are willing to cut them off.
NK steals WHOLE TRAINS from China. The Chicoms LIKE South Korea. They do BUSINESS and business is GOOD and its profitable for China.
NK is a DRAIN on China.
I’m thinking that NK is going to get cut off soon.
BUT WHAT DO I NNOW? I only lived in Asia for 15 years.
Betcha China cuts off NK and does an end around and starts (sorry, they already have started serious)biz with Soul.
Chicoms don’t LIKE Kim Jung Whatever.
Now, that is freeping funny..................
A diversion by his greatness obozorama.
Your great grandson will likely serve a tour there.
Agreed, but what? One battalion of armor isn’t going to make that much difference.....although I am glad to see it being to a type of environment where it can properly function and be used effectively if required.
However, I do not think Mr. Obama has the intestinal fortitude to go toe to toe with any country...but especially North Korea which is lead by a lunatic. He is totally unpredictable. So, I can only conclude that beefing up our forces there is a new form of détente.
Looks like an Intel Summary.
“NK is a DRAIN on China.....Im thinking that NK is going to get cut off soon.”
North Korea is a drain on China, and a boil on its butt. However, the Chinese would “lose face” if North Korea should fall.....so they WILL NOT allow it to happen. The only way North Korea will fall, and not upset China, is IF China is the one to actually invade and subdue North Korea. That “may” happen one day IF it becomes advantageous to China to do so.
bump for later worry
USFK Beefs Up Combat Capability
The U.S. Forces Korea wants to add a mechanized infantry battalion equipped with tanks and armored infantry fighting vehicles to the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division this year.
Already last year, the U.S. redeployed a chemical battalion and an attack reconnaissance battalion to Korea.
A two-star deputy operations commander has joined the 8th U.S. Army headquarters, which had been mainly in charge of personnel services but was restructured as a combat command.
The measures aim at improving the USFK’s combat capabilities amid uncertainties over North Korea.
“The USFK will apparently add a battalion armed with state-of-the-art M1A2 tanks and M2A3 armored infantry fighting vehicles to the 1st Brigade of the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division this year,” a military source said Monday.
The 1st Brigade has been the main combat force here since the 2nd Brigade was relocated to Iraq in 2004.
In April last year, the USFK redeployed the 23rd Chemical Battalion here, which is tasked with removing biological and chemical weapons in a war, nine years after it was pulled out.
Last October, it also redeployed the attack reconnaissance battalion of the 6th Cavalry Regiment, which has about 30 OH-58D armed choppers. It had been withdrawn five years earlier.
The moves come despite drastic cuts to the U.S. defense budget.

My theory is that Obama wants the troops out of the country so they are not here if needed for...things.
Thanks! Very helpful!!
South Korea doesn’t need to take over North Korea. They just need to destroy their offensive military ability. Considering the shape of NK hardware, that wouldn’t take much.
