The South can handle the North as long as the chikoms don’t get involved. I hope the issue is settled the next time and if the chikoms don’t help they should be flooded with refugees. It’s real the Souths’ problem and we should get out.

The South can handle North Korea, they can’t handle China. We’re there to keep China out of it.

Probably related to the Dennis Rodman tour - the tanks are there to make sure he doesn’t come back across the border.

What does this translate to in terms of formation for a cavalry division? A couple of troops(?) of tanks with mechanized infantry?

Help us out, TIA.

Japanese translation today (8 Jan.) of original Korean, from "Chosun Ilbo" Daily, explaining some of the reasons for this, as you said, something is "up" perhaps with the North along the border. Mods: This is open source material I might add, in view of FR's "loose lips" policy. Please note. Open Source (someone might want to use automated translation, don't have time for it just now):

Since China has a better relationship with South Korea than with the North these days, this troop movement is probably just symbolism (though a few B-2’s doing low-level flyovers of Pyongyang might make the point better...)

Before I ended up with my foot in my mouth, because I was almost certain I saw the article right here on FR, I double=checked:

“It is hoped that the relations of Russia and South Korea will reach a major breakthrough in 2014, South Korean Ambassador to Russia Wi Sung-lak said. “The new year will become a year of mutual visits so I expect a considerable growth in exchanges between our countries. We are certain that quantitative increase of exchange will lead to a major breakthrough in the bilateral relations,” Wi Sung-lak said.

A number of agreements have been reached during the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to South Korea, in particular an agreement on visa-free travel between the two countries, which comes effect since January 1, 2014, has been signed, the ambassador said.

Visa-free travel “will become a key event in enhancing mutual ties” in the bilateral relations, Wi Sung-lak said.

“The coming year is the Year of the Horse. Horse is a symbol of dynamics. Let new major dynamic breakthroughs occur in the Korean-Russian relations in the Year of the Horse,” the ambassador said in Russian.

Voice of Russia, Interfax”

2ndDivisionVet, I wonder if your reaction is akin to mine...I’m thinking - let Putin and his boys take over at the 38th parallel if South Korea and Russia are such buddies.

South Korea has zero trust for China. They have shows on tv in south korea detailing how bad Chinese products are. They get hidden cameras into factories showing the chinese putting poison and garbage into food.

In one case the chinese factory was caught putting maggot infested spoiled meat sitting outside in the rubbish into cans.

Just my Humble Opinion.

I think that China is soooo tired of NK, that they are willing to cut them off.

NK steals WHOLE TRAINS from China. The Chicoms LIKE South Korea. They do BUSINESS and business is GOOD and its profitable for China.

NK is a DRAIN on China.

I’m thinking that NK is going to get cut off soon.

BUT WHAT DO I NNOW? I only lived in Asia for 15 years.

LOL.

Betcha China cuts off NK and does an end around and starts (sorry, they already have started serious)biz with Soul.

Chicoms don’t LIKE Kim Jung Whatever.

“Something’s up.”

Agreed, but what? One battalion of armor isn’t going to make that much difference.....although I am glad to see it being to a type of environment where it can properly function and be used effectively if required.

However, I do not think Mr. Obama has the intestinal fortitude to go toe to toe with any country...but especially North Korea which is lead by a lunatic. He is totally unpredictable. So, I can only conclude that beefing up our forces there is a new form of détente.
