The city of Los Angeles could receive as much as $500 million in grant money over the next decade under a federal program to fight poverty and improve quality of life, according to reports.

Under the Promise Zone initiative, LA and four other regions across the United States have been selected as part of the Obama Administration’s plan to combat high poverty in American communities, White House officials announced Wednesday.

The initiative, which was first announced in President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union speech, is designed to bolster partnerships between local businesses and their community “to create jobs, increase economic security, expand access to educational opportunities and quality, affordable housing and improve public safety,” according to a statement.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports five specific neighborhoods will be eligible to receive federal funds: Pico-Union, Westlake, Hollywood, East Hollywood, and Koreatown, which all share ethnically diverse and economically challenged demographics.

Make the “promise”, and take it away in 3 years. Help LA accelerate down the tubes.

If Obama believed there was any chance that his Promise Zone handouts would create any measurable improvement, he would have named them ObamaZones.

Los Angeles is being destroyed by three sets of bad Democratic economic policies — from Washington, the California state government, and the Los Angeles city government; so it has little chance of avoiding the fate of Detroit, which is to inevitably turn into a pile of rubble pretending to be a city.

It’s his own stash. Shouldn’t he be able to do with it as he wants? More minutes and data plans for the ObamaFones!

Probably funding from Bloomberg, who is on his way out there to reform LA the same as he did NYC.

Perhaps the dems want L.A. to look like a “model city” by the time Villaraigosa tries to run for CA Governor, Pres or VP so his opponents (us) can’t point to it.

Little carts to hold bags of oranges on freeway exits and covered benches for big box store parking lots.

Import millions of poor Mexicans

They were saying yesterday that there 3 unemployed applicants for each new job opening -- great idea import more unemployed applicants.

I’d bet that each of these 5 Promise Zones has a carefully calculated purpose. If not vote buying, then crony payoffs.

Agreed.

The best way to combat poverty is to pile up dead socialists and communists like cordwood along the side of the road, from sea to shining sea.

Indeed he is, he seems to be threatened by their proposals, and all the while claiming the Republicans have not plans.

I agree. And for the record, the weed and doritos stuff doesn’t bother me. Most conservatives are of a libertarian bent, and we have so much more in common with the libertarians than with liberals or progressives. I can see lots of room for compromise on the weed issue. We have more serious fish to fry in the country right now.
