The high cost of being a legal immigrant in the US: $465
The Guardian ^ | 8 January 2014 | Jana Kasperkevic

A year and a half ago, President Barack Obama announced a band-aid for the immigration system, providing two-year work permits for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children before their 16th birthdays. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program had undocumented immigrants rejoicing that the door to the US had opened, if only slightly.

Yet Reyna Maldonado, who came to the US from Mexico as a child, hasn't felt like celebrating. There was one big question weighing on her mind: "Where do we come up with this money?"

Maldonado, who is currently in the process of applying for DACA, is not the only one questioning the costs of the application, which can prove prohibitively high.

In the first year of its existence, DACA fell short of reaching the estimated 1.09 million undocumented immigrants who are eligible for the program. Only 567,563 people applied, half in the three months following the program's launch, according to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Many have blamed the slow rate of applications on the lack of outreach to immigrant communities, and those communities' deeply embedded fear of deportation. While DACA program does not offer a path to citizenship, it does provide working permits to those who qualify, allowing them to obtain essential documents like social security number and a driver's license – if they have the time and money.

Anecdotally, the expense also may discourage undocumented immigrants, like Maldonado, from applying. Cost has been one of the top reasons why people eligible for DACA delay their application, says Sarah Hooker, policy analyst at Migration Policy Institute. The $456 application fee, while minuscule to most middle-class Americans, has played a large role in preventing young undocumented immigrants from applying for work permits.

They cannot come up with $ 456.00 and want drivers licenses at the same time cannot afford insurance. How are illegals paying in state tuition ?Asking for handouts.in August 2012, non-profits focused on immigration have partnered with local and state bar associations, as well as other legal organizations, to set up DACA clinics that help undocumented families for free. And illegals Obama says will help America prosper..Prosper to the land of food stamps and welfare...No more land of milk and honey.

Most of the Latinos in my neighborhood (many of whom are presumably not here legally) have much nicer automobiles than I do. If they wanted to live here legally I doubt that less than $500 would stop them. This article is crap.

That’s interesting. You must have a better grade of illegal. Most around here are regulars at Pick-a-Part and show a strong affinity for mid-90s Chrysler minivans to haul their ever-expanding families.

Already almost 47% of ur US population are non producers [other than spawning more feral children] and live on government subsidies which exceed any taxes they pay to our government.

Obama’s magisterial wave of his hand to let resident illegals register for what amounts to quasi citizenship, plus the pending bills to grant amnesty to the rest of the illegals here and in the pipeline of border jumping will tip the moocher, useless mouth crowd percentage to a majority percent guaranteed to destroy our nation economically and socially.

We have plentiful jobs for everybody, legal, illegal, black, white, male, female, etc. That makes a difference.

The $465 cost refers to an illegal immigrant purchasing a "Get Out of Jail" work permit.

For someone actually trying to OBEY the law and all the regulations of the INS, the cost is much, much higher. We have a couple of friends who have spent thousand of dollars and years submitting forms, resubmitting forms after INS says, "We have nor record of receiving that form", and traveling back and forth to meet with officials who cancel appointments without notifying the applicant.

The US does need immigration reform, just not the kind the Democrats & the media are demanding. Instant citizenship and Democrat voter registration is a vulgar debasement of what it means to be come a US citizen. What does need changing is the whole application process for those who WANT to obey the law.

The other major change needs concerns the current quota system.

A loved one is a LEGAL immigrant. Married a citizen (opposite sex). THOUSANDS of dollars in legal fees, application fees, and countless days lost to abusive immigration officials behaving hostilely and irrationally.

Just to do everything by the book.

Oh, and in their waiting rooms: “no electronic devices!” WTF?!!!

At this point, I’d disband the ICE and let everyone in. If we eliminated all welfare and Section 8 for everyone.

What happens when illegals with drivers licenses get traffic fines that are $300-$ 400. I guess they will ignore it and get new ids to stay ahead. When health problem come up the taxpayers will be paying to provide free healthcare for illegals. While Obamacare takes everything it can get from us and leaves us hanging in mountains of debt and illegals will be rewarded.

The illegals think they have it tough coming up with $465. They should be a taxpayer who has to come up with a heck of a lot more than that to support the illegals living here.

I’ve noticed that too. The non English speaking aliens seem to have better vehicles than most citizens.

Was stuck in an airport some months ago watching one of their sob stories on CNN. Two things I couldn't help noticing:

  1. Every illegal drove a newer and nicer car than I did.
  2. Every single one had a large (40" plus) flat screen television in their homes. (I just bought our first flat screen, a mere 32", when the price dropped below $250 this past Christmas)

You'd think CNN would at least try to get them to drive clunkers and hide the flat screens for better propaganda purposes just for the duration of the filming.

This cites the $465 as a reason they don't sign up but I been saying forever that there's another key reason.

They have to identify themselves knowing that technically they will still be illegal and it can be used against them some day. They have no idea what will come after Obama.

Why don’t all the “immigration reform” political advocacy groups dip into the millions in their budgets and help out with the fees? Let them put their money where their mouth is.

Well, one thing I know is that Latino men love their cars. They’ll prioritize having a nice ride over medical care, tuition for their children, savings, and a lot of other things that natives might put higher on the list.

There was a report that Mexicans are the most shameless in applying for it.

Amongst Asians there is less of a takeup because of shame.

Illegal Mexicans have a racial entitlement to be subsidized by the US Taxpayer.

They pay the coyotes 3-5 times the cost of doing it legit. Illegals prefer to operate off the government database grid under their real identities. They are experts at gaming the system.

CORRECTION:

They pay the coyotes 3-5 times the cost of doing it legit. Illegals prefer to operate off the government database grid that would require them to use their real identities. They are experts at gaming the system by operating on a cash basis and using multiple (stolen) identities .
