Man Gets 35 Years for Shooting Police Dog
UPI ^ | Jan. 7, 2014

A South Carolina man who killed a police dog during a gunfight and chase has pleaded guilty and will serve 35 years in prison, officials said. Maurice McCreary, 24, admitted he fired a half-dozen shots at officers who were pursuing him after an armed robbery Dec. 16, 2011. No officers were hit but Fargo, who along with a large contingent of police was chasing McCreary.

When Fargo caught up to McCreary the dog bit him and latched on. As McCreary tried to run away he shot at the animal. Fargo survived long enough to make it to an emergency veterinarian but died later that night.

Several officers who testified at Monday's hearing became emotional when recalling that night, including Richland County Sheriff's investigator Warren Cavanagh, Fargo's handler, the State of Columbia reported.

"Who did he have that gun drawn for?" Cavanagh asked. "Yes, there was a dog that was killed, but he was killed doing his job and that was protecting these officers that night."

Eventually more than 200 officers were called in to help hunt down McCreary over a nine-hour span. He was eventually found sleeping in a shed behind a home in the area.

McCreary apologized to officers before receiving his sentence.

"Being bit by a dog, I did freak out and I did shoot at the dog," McCreary said. "I just ask that you accept my apology. It was never my intention to go out that night and shoot at officers and have a shootout."

McCreary pleaded guilty to five counts of attempted murder and one count of killing a police dog. He was sentenced to five concurrent 30-year terms for the attempted murder charges and an additional five years for killing the police dog, to be served after he completes the attempted murder sentences.

Yes, they can apparently kill our dogs with impunity.

Good luck to him in the prison yard.

Do you think he's going to receive some kind of prison justice because he shot a police dog?

Hell, half the guys in the joint probably know the pain of having a K-9's jaws attached to their leg. I doubt they'll hold much animosity towards him.

This headline is completely misleading. He got 5 years for shooting the dog, 30 years for the other offenses of which he was convicted.

Is that the same penalty for cop who shoots your dog?

I'd like to know too.

No offense, this is BS.

Cops shoot your damn dog for no good reason many times (sometimes legitimate) and they get nothing.

Government hypocrisy. Cops have killed their OWN K-9 dogs leaving them in their freaking cars and they get nothing, they don’t get fired, they don’t pay tens of thousands to replace the dog. Don’t tell me it’s accidental, for anyone who lives with a dog - and an expensive one they are around 24/7.

Freaking hypocrisy.

.......I think the OVER-ARCHING issue is that if the cops want us lowly citizens to respect them and their dogs they should respect our dogs.

That said, this scumbag got off light as far as I am concerned. If you start shooting at a bunch of cops and their dog, a more appropriate result for you is one between the eyes. In fact, feeling a little cocky today, I would say if you start firing rounds at any human during the commission of a crime or anywhere else that one between the eyes is what you have coming! And, as Barry would say, that’s a PERIOD!

He only got 5 years for the dog. The other 30 years were for attempted murder of human beings the jack boot thugs hunting him down like HE was a subhuman.

Fixed that for ya...

Yes, he shot back at the cops, but we don't know the whole story on that, do we? Nor will we, thanks to a the complicit MSM.

Ummmmm 5 years is a harsher sentence than a paycheck from the public.

OOPS! Missed the armed robbery bit.

Dipwad is lucky to be alive, let alone any other considerations. I officially retract my previous statement regarding this incident.

LOL. So you admit that you have absolutely no grasp of the facts, but you still feel entitled to call them JBTs even given your lack of said facts.

It's easy to assume that is the case.

We had an incident a few years back that happened in Henderson (about 25 miles S.E of Vegas) where cops used a no knock warrant on the wrong house in the early AM. (Confidential informant strikes again)

The home owner opened up with a few shot gun blasts against the intruders (IIRC, wounded one) and was subsequently charged with 6 counts of attempted murder on a police officer.

I wish I could tell you the outcome of the story but it got vaporized.

Some dogs are more equal than others. IIRC, police dogs are legally the same as a human, should harm befall them at the hands of a civilian.
