This is just the Fed-size version of the temper tantrum pulled by any local town where suddenly there is not enough money in the budget for school books, chalk, toilet paper for the school. You name it. Whatever gets the public’s attention. Meanwhile the same town will have hired another dozen or so assistant vice principals for LGBT studies.

Just claim that the entire crew was gay and that the Monitor was the original love boat. All the money they need would come flowing like manna from heaven.

That’s really the point, isn’t it?

What right - under the Constitution - does the Federal government have to take by force what a man has earned and use it for charity?

If it is OK for the Monitor museum than why wouldn’t it be even better to ‘help’ poor people in the same manner?

It’s time for a group to form, raise money & eventually exhibit the Monitor relics

They already are exhibited. I went and saw the relics last week. Those The Prop and drive shaft are in display and there is a viewing gallery were you can look in on the cannons and turret itself. The Mariner's Museum is well worth a visit if you are ever in the Hampton Roads area.

“I cannot believe this could be allowed to happen.”

Two big reasons and why this is happening to our once very prosperous country. It is only the beginning. It is also why we are in such debt.

1- Crooked leaders and politicians failed to defend our borders for decades. They gave mostly unskilled uneducated invaders amnesty and access to our social services and safety net in the 80s, and as they wish to do now. They failed to enforce our laws.

2- The same gang failed to defend our our national security, national sovereignty, our market, our economy, and our tax base while making the globalists who own them very rich and when they screwed up requiring taxpayers to bail them out. There are tons of waste, fraud and corruption too but the core reason is that those entrusted to defend America, gave it away.

Now Obama is giving away more with his secret Hollywood inspired Trans Pacific Partnership that will weaken our sovereign rights to run our own country. Americans can argue about politics but while we are doing it our nation is being stolen.

And there are a lot of capable people out there that would probably be delighted to do it.

The U.S.S. Monitor is still a NAVY ship owned by the US Government. Due to its historic importance, by law they may not sell it. It is rightly the property of the American people.

I have worked on many, many public and private historic preservation projects over the years. I’d be willing to bet far more than anybody here. The Federal government does a far better job than most state governmenst. Private organizations tend to do the worst.

Just telling it like it is.

It’s not the governments job in my book. This should be a privately funded endeavor.

Agree ... and if it were, I'm sure that many people on this forum would voluntarily kick in a few bucks for it.

USS Monitor preservation threatened due to lack of Federal funds.

Let the USS Monitor vote in Nov 2014. There will be plenty of .gov money for it then.

It’s part of American history, Americana.

Obama hates that.

What can they do there’s only so much money?

I mean do you want the study of the sex habbits of gay furries ended? Or funds cut for such wonderful artworks as a cross floating in a vat of urine? Maybe cut out the towel boys at the Congressional gym? What are we savages?

The Hunley’s preservation was largely funded by National Geographic.

The preservation funds were spent on Golf and Pina Coladas. There you go. Foooooore!

Somewhere upstream, by two or three days, in the postings here on FR was an article about the waste perpetrated by what we still, though laughingly now, and with great disdain, call government. Any one of those sewer pits could have provided the funding for this project.

‘The Navy raised the Monitor as a sort of enhanced training exercise. It’s time for a group to form, raise money & eventually exhibit the Monitor relics. Otherwise, they never should have raised it in the first place. (that’s my frustration showing).’

Something like the campaign to raise and preserve the CSS Hunley would seem to be the best approach. The mariners Museum might begin by making an appeal to the heritage preservation community as an emergency measure.

The Navy can strike the “USS Monitor” and sell it for scrap or as a museum ship — or “reef” it if they so chose. The “museum ship” route would allow a private organization to preserve it as a national monument. It’s literally done all the time.
