PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans continue to be more likely to identify as conservatives (38%) than as liberals (23%). But the conservative advantage is down to 15 percentage points as liberal identification edged up to its highest level since Gallup began regularly measuring ideology in the current format in 1992.
The figures are based on combined data from 13 separate Gallup polls, including interviews with more than 18,000 Americans, conducted in 2013.
When Gallup began asking about ideological identification in all its polls in 1992, an average 17% of Americans said they were liberal. That dipped to 16% in 1995 and 1996, but has gradually increased, exceeding 20% each year since 2005.
The rise in liberal identification has been accompanied by a decline in moderate identification. At 34% in 2013, it is the lowest Gallup has measured, and down nine points since 1992. Moderates had been the largest ideological group throughout the 1990s, and competed with conservatives for the top spot during the 2000s. Since 2009, conservatives have consistently been the largest U.S. ideological group.
The percentage of conservatives has always far exceeded the percentage of liberals, by as much as 22 points in 1996. With more Americans identifying as liberals in recent years, and conservative identification holding steady, the conservative advantage of 15 points ties the 2007 and 2008 gaps as the smallest.
Democrats Increasingly Likely to Identify as Liberal

The slime is becoming more brazen. I bet if you polled you would also find more people admitting to a host of anitsocial views.
For the low info voter, liberal = the correct answer. Media supplies that info a million times a day.
It looks like more “moderates” are being honest now ...
I have a lesbian cousin who self-identifies as a conservative. She espouses every liberal cause but has relabeled them as conservative. Talking to her is a mind-bending experience. She described Cincinnati as the heart of the right-wing religious KKK. When I pointed out the KKK was the paramilitary arm of the Democratic party it went into her head and came back at me as yes, I know, but now they’re all right wing religious nuts. I think she’s registered Republican, which explains the 5% of the R’s who love Obama. (Cue Twilight Zone theme.)

The words “conservative” and “liberal” are getting to be so elastic that it confuses the hell out of people.
Prime Minister of the UK David Cameron is supposed to be a conservative... yet, he supports gay marriage.
The party in Australia that wants to cut taxes, do away with carbon taxes, are wary about Muslim immigrants and are for traditional marriage is the LIBERAL PARTY.
The recently deceased talk radio legend, Bob Grant is a conservative radio talk show host, but he’s Pro-Choice and supported Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio.
it’s coming to a point where we really have to look at the issues on a case by case basis before we can label anyone “conservative” or “liberal”.
Public education has finally succeeded in making a majority of Americans just plain stupid.
“...look at the issues on a case by case basis before we can label anyone conservative...”
We can’t agree on the questions, much less the answers.
I can handle Liberals, at least their honest in what they believe. Its the moderates that drive me crazy. They think theyre too high and mighty to take a stance.
At least have the balls to stand up for what you believe in.
Out-of-wedlock pregnancy among young girls and barriers to the employment of the young create huge numbers of young people looking for a leftist state to take care of them -- even while the leftist state is to blame for many of their problems.
We need to stop young girls from having children while at the same time reducing payroll taxes and other barriers to the employment of the young.
RE: We need to stop young girls from having children while at the same time reducing payroll taxes and other barriers to the employment of the young.
The recently departed talk show host pioneer, Bob Grant used to suggest that women on chronic welfare should be sterilized. Guess where that landed him...
At another blog that I frequent, the resident ‘Progressive’ now identifies himself as a ‘conservative’.
This is truly a scary time.
I think this fits....
“Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.” Voltaire
Oh... At first I thought the heading read “Liberal Self-Immolation Edges Up to New High in 2013.” Should have known that wasn’t it, given they only eff up everybody’s else’s stuff.
gallup is paid for this garbage... they are to be trusted as much as jay carney. They said the same thing in 2010... how did that election turn out?
they are to be trusted as much as jay carney
Jay Carney = Obama’s newest Imam. Nice beard, but it needs some Scott’s Turf Builder.
No kidding. The word “conservative” hardly seems have much meaning anymore. It boggles my mind that there are so-called conservative pundits who vocally argue not just pro-amnesty, pro-dope, and pro-fag marriage views, but maintain all three at once!
If those things are now part of “conservatism,” then I guess I’m no longer a conservative!
Oh you just broke my heart. I didn’t know the great Bob Grant had passed. I was just telling someone about him he was a radio legend my whole life.
Sorry you did not know. But we have several threads on Bob Grant’s passing here at FR the past several days.
Just search for his name and you’ll see the list of threads.
My point is — as conservative as we’d like to believe some people are, on many issues, they DISAPPOINT us.
Your examples are very good. It's true. "Conservative" and "liberal" are very, very fuzzy concepts. All of us on FR who argue over this point or the other know that. After all, what is a conservative?
At some point, perhaps, very soon, we'll come up with better ones. Big-government and small-government are, perhaps, more accurate, though we'll have to come up with zippier and shorter labels than those.
