Posted on 01/10/2014 4:06:27 PM PST by cotton1706
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Bill Marcy said Friday that he's changing party labels, but not his conservative beliefs, to run as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi this year.
The Vicksburg resident courted tea party voters when he ran as a Republican for the U.S. House in 2010 and 2012. Both times, he lost to Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson.
Marcy, 67, said Friday that he filed qualifying papers for the Senate race Wednesday with the state Democratic Party. He's the first Democrat to enter the statewide race for a seat that has been held by Republican Thad Cochran for 35 years.
Cochran, 76, is seeking a seventh six-year term and faces a primary challenge from Chris McDaniel, 42, a state lawmaker with tea party backing.
Candidates' qualifying deadline is March 1, and party primaries are June 3.
In a phone interview with The Associated Press on Friday, Marcy described his candidacy as "Plan B," a way to give tea party members a voice in the Nov. 4 general election if McDaniel loses the Republican primary to Cochran.
Marcy, who is black, said he believes he'll be elected with support of black voters and tea party members a coalition he concedes would be unusual in Mississippi politics. About 38 percent of Mississippi residents are black, and Marcy said many are socially conservative but don't like the Republican label.

Interesting! Why not? Gotta play the game the way the DEMS play it.
Will he vote for Harry Reid as majority leader? That is the big problem.
I was just talking to someone about this today,,why not infiltrate the Dem party and splinter it all to hell?!
At least he’s not Bennie....is he?
good for him, hope it works out.
I have no special affinity for the R any more
If he caucuses with the Bolshies, he is a Bolshie.
“Interesting! Why not? Gotta play the game the way the DEMS play it.”
Yes indeedie, very interesting. Wonder if he would pledge to, if elected as a Democrat, to caucus with the Republicans. Now, “that” would be interesting.....
This is a strategy that I have argued for (if you can make acquaintance with genuine liberals) in heavily Democratic areas. Why you would do this in MS??
Exactly what happened when a lot of democrats changed parties and rode Ronald Reagan's coattails into the RINO camp.
That is EXACTLY the kind of crap leftists use against us. Good plan.
Liebermann caucused with the Rs.
The day after the election he will switch parties
Heck why not McCain calls himself an Republican, as does Collins, Alexander, Corker.....
Seems we have another Senate seat in play we didn’t know about.
Absolutely. I’ve been suggesting this as a strategy in the very blue area I’m in. Half the people are totally uninformed & vote ‘D’, regardless of anything else. Just take over their party...or take it away from the communists.
I was registered as a Democrat for years. Never voted for one in a general election, voted for the weakest ones in the primaries, just so I could get some kind of voice in our supposedly “representative” government.
I’ve met a few people in Detroit who say they would vote for a republican but none ever run and the powers that be would never let one win.
I think things are changing in Detroit though. They just elected the first white mayor in 50 years, the GOP just opened a new office in the city and the police chief is pushing the 2nd amendment as a deterrent to crime. I also notice that Obama didn’t name Detroit as a “Promise zone”.
Either he will vote for Harry Reid (and is therefore no better than any other Democrat), or he won’t (and therefore isn’t a Democrat). Lying to con black voters may win an election if the state is filled with stupid people of both races, but it’s not a decent way to win.
By the way, this has been done before. Carolyn McCarthy of NY, for instance, swore she was a lifelong Republican, only running as a Democrat because it was the best way to defeat an incumbent Republican who she disliked on a single issue (guns) and claimed was a RINO on a host of other issues. Once in office, she has voted in lock-step with the most radical of left-wingers. It’s not the perfect example, because she admittedly ran as a liberal on one important issue, but it’s the one closest to where I’m from.
RKBA you have a similar story too don't you?
To clarify a previous post of mine: I’d be all for a conservative running as a Democrat in an area that had no hope of electing a Republican, but this scum-sucking bag of lying human filth is running for Senator of Mississippi. Whatever he promises, he plans on taking away your gun rights, cramming gay marriage down everyone’s throats, raising your taxes to put coal out of business and making sure your 12-year-old daughter can get all the sex advice and abortions she pleases. But he’ll vote to do so only when his vote is needed, so the ACU can give him a rating in the 70s.
If he’s nominated and beats Cochran, the media won’t know what to make of it.
Larry McDonald was a Democrat.
“Liebermann caucused with the Rs.”
Yes, but wasn’t that after he changed to an “I”? This fellow is running as a “D.”
I’m not buying into this. Let him run as a democrat in the primary against Bennie Thompson. Mississippi has open primaries and enough republicans could cross over to beat Bennie. Since that district will go dem no matter who runs then he would win.
That would be the way to infiltrate the dem party.
“Marcy, who is black, said he believes he’ll be elected with support of black voters and tea party members “
But the media has told me the Tea Party is racist.
“About 38 percent of Mississippi residents are black, and Marcy said many are socially conservative but don’t like the Republican label.”
A quarter of a century after Reagan left office, and I don’t care for the Republican label either.
He’s running for US Senate this time, not against Bennie Thompson.
These days, "conservative" democrats mean those that won't take your guns away but will vote for committee chairs and speakers who will work to take your guns away.
There is a special place in hell reserved for politicians like Bart Stupak and Joe Donnelly.
It might be easier to reform some segments of the democrat party than the GOP. Especially when it is a black candidate.
And, if a few others switch to the Democrat label, maybe they can help Democrats win back the majority.
How many of the rest of the Democrats then would be conservative?
Whoops, make that help the Democrats retain the majority ion the Senate
It is good to keep Cochran voting conservative until the election and there is a net gain of GOP Senators.
Absolutely not, Lieberman caucused with the Dems after he declared the “Independent” label.
That is what the CPUSA did. They took over the party. Maybe we could take it back. It would also eliminate a lot of the fraud that we can't fight against as GOP.
“Liebermann caucused with the Rs.”
No he didn’t!
“Carolyn McCarthy of NY”
Well, she’s announced that she’s stepping down, so who’s going to get her seat?
Old coch-roach paying this man to run to try to dissolve the Conservative vote... sorry... ain’t going to work. The blacks may vote for him but Chris McDaniel is going to win because he has established CONSERVATIVE credentials and he is trustworthy and he is NOT A FRIGGIN’ RAT! Anyone that would run as a RAT has sold his soul to satan and will not even get 30 pieces of silver.
BTW, I was thinking about a Mississippi ping... that is a cyber version of YEEE-HIII... isn’t it? ;-)
Socially conservative but many love socialism and they want more of the TWENTY TRILLION DOLLARS OF WELFARE BRIBES THAT HAVE BEEN PAID OUT TO THEM SINCE JOHNSON’S “GREAT SOCIETY” FAILURE WAS CREATED.
Hell yes he will.
I believe this man is trying to split the Conservative vote to help thad... I truly do.
I would vote for Allen West in a heartbeat... but not because of the color of his skin and I believe that Allen would agree... his running has nothing to do with race. That man loves America and is brilliant. He is a true PATRIOT!
“Liebermann caucused with the Rs.”
Umm, better run a little fact check on this. Lieberman ran as an Independent his last term. But, even though the Democrat leadership refused to endorse him during the election process he remained under the Democrat umbrella after being reelected by declaring that he would caucus with them. That’s not to say that he didn’t stray off the reservation from time to time which he did - especially on defense issues. He was a hawk when it came to defending Israel for sure.
I’m not aware of any Democrat that declared to caucus with Republicans or vise versa. But, I’m no authority on this.
If he is Conservative, do you really think he would join the Marxist Democrat Party?
He's been promised something, by Thad or maybe even the Governor. Thad is 76!
