Chevy Camaro ZL1 owner fights dealership that totaled his car
Yahoo news ^ | 01/09/14 | By Justin Hyde

At 580 hp and a starting price of $55,000, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 ranks as the top dog of the Camaro lineup (at least until the Z/28 hits the track.) For Camaro enthusiasts like John Hooper, author of six books on the history of Camaros, it's a dream car — or at least was a dream car, until an employee at a Chevy dealership totaled his ZL1 on an unauthorized joyride. Nearly a month later, Hooper and the dealership have yet to agree on how much that particular top dog was worth.

According to Hooper's posts on the Camaro5 forum, he had taken his 2012 Camaro ZL1 to First State Chevy in Georgetown, Del., for warranty work on a paint issue. On Dec. 15, a Sunday, one of the dealer's employees took the keys from the closed dealership and went for a spin — that ended when the ZL1 sheared off a telephone pole.

The next day, the dealership told Hooper about the incident, and by the end of that week, the car had been declared a total loss. Since then, Hooper and First State have been unable to reach an accord over how to replace the ZL1.

To First State's credit, it immediately fired the employee who took the car and tried to pursue charges against him — but local officials said since the car was in the dealership's legal possession at the time of the crash, no crime was committed. Hooper's ZL1 had about 10,000 miles on it, and while First State has offered other used ZL1s as replacements, Hooper has said those cars were not worth as much as his example was pre-crash.

SS/RS mine had the endura bumper. Wish I still had it. The 69 with the RS package and the cowl induction hood was one of the best if not the best looking automobile ever made.

Yeah, I don’t like the new Camaros much at all. The only retro muscle car that I really like is the Mustang.

That paint job would look pretty nifty on my old station wagon.

To each their own, but I hope you’re posting in jest.

In my personal opinion, they’ve already ruined that Camaro along with the gold one down the page. Same applies for the Impala as well.

This crap happens all the time and the dealers just don’t seem to really care. SOP is to try and distance themselves from liability by claiming it’s some rogue employee.

I just bought a new Chevy Equinox, got all the extended warranty and free lifetime synthetic oil change tossed in, what am I doing tomorrow?

Changing the oil myself, I used to be a GM tech, the lowest paid employees are the ones that change the oil. When i am unable to do it then I will tell the wife to take it in, I bought it for her.

I may in the near future either buy a caddy CRX, another Equinox or possibly a Corvette, and I would at the very least install an app that tells me when the car is running, where its heading etc, or tell the service department it has such software, if it moves I will know it.

Most definitely. I wrote in 45 that I don’t like the new Camaros much at all, even when they’re not all screwed up like the 2 “hip hop” versions I posted. I don’t know what else to call these modern customs with the ridiculously over-sized wheels. I know a lot of people who are into hip hop music love them. They’ve seem to replaced the low riders.

I went and checked out a new Camaro last month, was not wowed a whole lot. The Corvette Stingray though has me interested.

I wasn’t saying that I know a lot of people who are into hip hop. I don’t. I meant I know that people who have those kinds of cars with the ridiculously large wheels are usually into hip hop and rap music.

I don’t honestly know if I have ever used the term “vulgar” to describe a thing.

Until now.

Absolutely. Same with 31. I posted them as jokes. I don’t even like the standard new Camaro much.

I would have turned it down too That's just ridiculous what they offered him. I couldn't imagine treating a customer that poorly, especially given the circumstances.
