TRENTON, New Jersey (Reuters) - Documents related to the bridge closure scandal engulfing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revealed on Friday that authorities were deeply divided about the shutdown, with one warning it was illegal and risking people's lives.

"Christie has long cultivated an image as a brash, tough-talking leader willing to buck his party for the good of his constituents. On Thursday, however, he took a more humble tone, saying: "I am not a bully."

If it keeps this guy from getting nominated, its good news for conservatives. Unfortunately, polls had him beating out Hillary. On the other hand, would having a Bush III in the White House be a good thing? We need a COP candidate who mirrors Ronald Reagan to win AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE, not a hot-tempered northeastern version of the Bush/Romney Klan.

I haven't read all the details of the story yet, but from what I gather the closings went on for days. If Christy was perfectly innocent and unaware of what his aides were up to, shouldn't he have done something after the first day of the closings, being the strong leader that he is? He could have even turned it into a show of leadership that would have gained him praise among the citizens of the area if he had ordered the lanes to be reopened. But he didn't.

All sounds pretty damning to me.

Meanwhile, the Gates book showing how Obama put 30,000 of our troops to war for political reasons goes un-discussed.

I’d guess based on location and weather, that bridge and travel gets closed more due to weather then stupid politicians.

Does Cuomo get diggs for closing the freeways last week?

Boob-bait for the butkis.

I agree with you. If the media and the dems want to take down Christie, that's great. Maybe they can come up with stuff about JebBush and Paul Ryan, too.

This has a fringe benefit nobody's talking about....the RNC boosted Christie's election margin by giving him campaign funds he didn't need to win, while they let Cuccinelli fail. There now is no doubt that the RNC is not our friend.

This was percolating for some time. When one person knows something, its a secret, when two people know it, the whole world does.

Its INCONCEIVABLE that such a micro-manager as Christie could POSSIBLY not know about it. FURTHER, it was a DUMB STUNT!!!
What the hell did it accomplish??? If he wanted to get at the mayor of Ft. Lee or Loretta Weinberg PERSONALLY - more power to him. But screwing with THOUSANDS of innocent people is inexcusable.

Will never forgive this guy for his mugging with Obama after the hurricane, accusing Newt Gingrich of being a “crook” (CHRISTIE’s words) when he thought he would be VP under Romney, attacking a civil servant for burning a Koran ON HIS OWN TIME in protest at the Ground Zero Mosque project AFTER HE RESPONDED that issue was a “local one” when questioned on this. Just recently he signed a bill to allow illegals to use state colleges in New Jersey.

Hard to fell sorry for this guy.

No good at all could come from Christie being the nominee or elected. So this is good because he’s another McCain.

We also know that the entire media pump machine used on Republicans hasn’t been seen for awhile because they ignore, twist, and obfuscate everything Democrats do. So the scumbags needed a good elephant hunt just to make sure their teeth and claws still work. It gets tiresome saying things are goody good each day and covering Michele Obama’s latest potato sacks.

Not a hair close to Beghazi Gate or IRS Gate or Obamacare Gate, but the media always scrutinizes GOP people a lot closer. The stunt was stupid, pointless and petty and having a guy running for office who is capable of such a witless petty act will be destructive in the long run for us.

I have this nagging thought that the demoRats set him up.

His cronies did that. At least one of them was even a friend since childhood.

If Christie did not know, he is incompetent and allowed his staff to run wild.

If he did know, then he is culpable.

Neither puts him a good light. Yes, he was quick to apologize -- months after the actual traffic slowdown. But his presser was about him and how sad he was and how angry he was that his cronies betrayed him. WHAT ABOUT THE CITIZENS WHO WERE INCONVENIENCED BY THIS PETTY AND VINDICTIVE ACTION? Two already submitted their resignations. A third got fired.

That presser question 'are you a bully?' will haunt any future electoral aspirations he may have.

I understand why liberals want to milk this lame story as long as possible. They plan to use it to hammer all GOP, conservative or Tea Party people. The screw-the-working-taxpayer party wants to permanently shift the narrative and make the GOP the bigger enemy of those who go to work everyday. This fits that plan perfectly.

I don't understand why so many conservatives are giddly helping them. I think in echo chambers like this, they fixate on the intra-party conservatives vs. moderates, tea party vs. GOP-e battle. That's a real battle, which we just won regarding Christie, but most morons out there don't even see any such distinction. We are one big happy party to them. Christie is Palin is McCain is Cruz.

Christie's political future is over. That's a win for conservatives, but its time to start using this scandal to highlight the absurd amount of coverage this story got compared to any Obama scandal. The way the media demanded answers here when they have no interest in answers from Democrats.

And the way Christie fired those he saw as responsible, turned over all the documents, apologized to the citizens for the people he put in positions of power that hurt their interests, stood in front of a hostile press and answered questions for over an hour, etc.

Christie's done. We need to start worrying about the fall out for future elections and stop helping the leftists make this story bigger than the moon landing.

I see. You must be uninformed or a RINO. Only a RINO would defend Christie and only someone unfamiliar with his track record and who thinks he is a conservative would do the same thing.

Maybe you should talk to some of the people who are conservatives in New Jersey and really know what this guy has pulled and what he is. You might become enlightened.

Bridgegate has done us conservatives a favor. Christie is right there with John McCain, Boehner, McConnell. Rove and the rest of them.

Good riddance.

If only conservatives would become the same sort of “anything someone on our side does is okay” sh!theads as the Democrats, then the Republican party would be okay.

No.

If the Repulican party is going to be what Christie is then it is better that it collapse.

The liberals are eating their own here. Conservatives are taking out rotting trash and hosing out the garage.

Bridget Kelly, the senior Christie staff member who was fired last week, had a long career in politics that included previous stints with Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.

I think Christie's political future was over the day he won re-election to a second term as New Jersey governor in November 2013.

I say this because I don't think he's ever had any aspirations to run for office again, despite all this nonsense about how the guy is a front-runner for the GOP nomination in 2016.

Your last paragraph is right on target. It's worth noting, however, that the direct, effective, no-nonsense person you're describing there rarely has any interest in wasting his life in politics.

With all due respect, he’s governor. Do you think he oversees every road closure in the state? He delegates such matters to his transportation secretary (staff member, whatever) and doesn’t give this type of thing a second thought.

If they can find a memo where he tells this person to cause a traffic tie-up in retribution, I think Christie’s fair game. If they can’t, this is a tempest in a tea-pot, just the sort of game the Democrats run on Republicans all the time.

The Democrats see Christie as a threat. Sure we can let them take him down. And then that leaves the coast clear for them to go after a more solid candidate, one we might approve of.

None of this goes down without repercussions.

Christie must not be our next presidential nominee, but this isn’t the way to go about that in a healthy manner.

On that last statement, we were in agreement years ago I’m sure.

Beck may have been on to something, or it may have simply been a humorous comparison that was fairly accurate as far as it went.

I’ll say it again. If it is shown that Christie did have prior knowledge and participated in the shut-down in some manner, then he deserves to go. I have no problem with justice being done. I just don’t want another groundless Leftist witch hunt to work it’s magic on another person.

Frankly, I wish the media would show 0.0001% of the tenacity it displays when it comes to Republicans, when it comes to holding Obama responsible for his malfeasance and worse.

Oh wait, that’s about what they have done...

re: Do you think he oversees every road closure in the state? He delegates such matters to his transportation secretary

No, I do not think he oversees every road closure in the state. However, in this instance his own top level staff were involved in closing roads, not leaving it purely to his transportation secretary. So, Christy is not off the hook. Was he complicit in the closures? I don't know, but this does not look good for him one bit. From what I have read on Christy prior to this entire episode, he has a long history of vindictive responses when he doesn't get what he wants. So, ordering road closures out of spite doesn't seem out of character for him.
