Target Stores security breach just the tip of the iceberg

Target has increased the estimate for the number of customers exposed in the massive hacking attack between Thanksgiving and December 14. It now appears at least 70 million consumers had their credit cards compromised.

Also, Neiman-Marcus announced that they, too, were victims of a cyber attack over Christmas. And in an exclusive report, Reuters is saying that several other well known retailers were also hacked over the holidays.

Neiman Marcus said an outside forensics firm discovered evidence on January 1 that indicated the retailer had been the victim of a cyber attack. It disclosed the breach nine days later, after another inquiry from Krebs, who was following up on reports about a surge in fraudulent charges traced to the retailer.

Target and J.C. Penney Co Inc. waited more than two years to admit that they were victims in 2007 of notorious hacker Albert Gonzalez, who was accused of masterminding the theft and reselling of millions of credit cards and ATM numbers.

During his trial the companies were represented by lawyers who did not identify their clients as Target and J.C Penney.

Doug Johnson, vice president of risk management policy with the American Bankers Association, said banks and credit card firms like Visa are forbidden from naming merchants that have been breached, unless they disclose it themselves.

No credit card is safe use at own risk.

It’s the area where I live. They are all in ruin. Last time I was forced to go to one I had to hide in the book section for a while to collect myself. I knew I could find peace there for a moment to get it together enough to make it to the exit. The Target’s are tolerable still at least, even if they refuse to sell guns/ammo.

If Bass Pro Shops sold groceries and whiskey I would never go anywhere else!

Wait the government will have a solution. It will be a patch that will put on the wrist or head for scanning.

Albert Gonzales never went to trial. He pled guilty ahead of the trial as part of a deal negotiated with the feds. So how much of this article can you trust when they get this basic fact wrong?

And, to get right to the heart of the matter, has anyone ever identified "segvec"? Or put him out of business - permanently? If not, then what are the CIA and FBI for, anyway?

Heck, every time I go I spend at least 20 minutes in the parking lot checking out some of the things my local rednecks have done to trick their trucks out into Zombie survival vehicles. That’s just as much fun as the store itself.

I agree, depending on when you guy it can be "nightmare of epic degree" experience or relatively enjoyable. Also, the location is very important.

I went in on Wednesday of this week and it was nice.

Also, I live in a "normal" area so our Walmarts are not too bad. When I lived in Raleigh the Walmart in Cary was a disturbing experience. Third world.

One time, when I was living overseas, my husband came home for a week so I gave him the standard "list" of items to buy while in the US. He was staying in Newark. He took a cab to the Newark Walmart. ha! He said it was pretty bad. I can't even imagine.

At the ammunition counter you will find that Winchester, Remington and Federal are well represented. At the gun sales case you will also find Winchester, Remington, Ruger, and Colt Firearms in abundance. Also nearly 100% of the reloading supplies and components are made in the USA along with over 70% of the other sporting goods. And last but not least, when you spend your money at Walmart it goes to an American Company and not a French one.

Not in the city limits. Walmart carries nothing of guns/ammo inside the city ring.

I shop at both Target and Walmart. I never seem to find what I want at Target, but I always seems to find it at Walmart. Walmart’s prices might be cheap but their quality isn’t. I don’t have a problem with the customers at our local Walmart. Just hard workin Americans.

I like Target, but the items I use the most are cheaper at SAM’s or WalMart. I opened a “red” card at Target to save 5% and it be drawn from my bank as a debit, but it never worked. So, I don’t even try. Maybe that was a warning from God! Anyway, I am finding I don’t need as much and since it is a drive into town, I try to get by with local stuff. When I have an appt., or something to go into town for, then I shop the big stores.

It’s “breach”. Breech is a baby born feet-first.

people don't seem to realize that the same brands WM sells, so do the big yuppie box stores.....most of it made in China...

as far as Target, I just don't like the store, I feel like I'm a mouse being ushered thru a maze....

to get to childrens, turn here, then here, then here, then stop....

anyone who goes to IKEA knows the feeling of being lead down the path...

- Those Obamacare website “Navigators” seem to have figured that that credit card and Social Security info they asked for is giving them a big Chicago style “piece of the action” in the Target Stores scams…..

FWIW, I thought that Dollar General gives its most capable employees a pretty quick path to management.

No credit card is safe...

Except for times I have to use a credit card, such as a hotel reservation, I'll shop on Amazon with their card. I figure that if Amazon's credit card is ever compromised, the economy will grind to a halt.

That may well be.
I’m not criticizing the folks working, it’s just that around here they appear to be seriously understaffed and generally in a terrible clutter.
I’m sure anybody working there is earning their paycheck.

“Please direct me to the ammunition counter and the gun sales case in Target?”

Don’t you find that a bit ironic, given their name? I’ll bet you can’t even buy a target in Target.
